I read this book as a teenager and 20 years later have decided to read it again. It resembles the movie Point Break (Swayze and Reeves) in that two strong characters (Catlow and Cowan) share respect for each other but are unavoidably drawn into conflict over the diverging life path each has chosen. The outlaw and marshall are worthy foes who match wisdom and skill in a Wild West chess match fueled by ego. Both characters become more than themselves by the challenge of each other. There is the adrenaline of pure competition in the book; it is Ali and Frazier as two cowboy characters, caught in the glory of the mental and physical fight.

Everyone of Louis L'Amours novels depict the western way of life that I'm sure we all agree is the way we believe it was.
