Two weeks later, a young couple moves into the house next door. Salina, who notices everything, whether its her buisness or not, sees that they have a dog. "Oh please, pretty pretty please can we go meet it?" She pleads with our mother. "No, Salina, thats a bull terrier. (I think thts the breed. Dont judge me.) We cant meet it untill we know those people better."---------For three months, Salina pouts. She asks to meet the terrier every day, and then every week. She talks nonstop about how cute it is, how she cant possibly believe that it would hurt a fly, that she is certain that it would be so friendly it would follow her around and love her more than its owners, and tht its owners would give it to her. She talks about how she already has a name for it, so she'll be ready when the neibors give her the terrier, and how shes sure its a girl, and shes going to call it Terry, and you get the idea.------------------------------------One weekend, we're outside riding our bikes, and the terrier is out in its yard. Salina gets off her bike and calls to the terrier. "Here, pup! Here, Terry! Come here!" It comes all right, running full speed across the lawn, and salina looks overjoyed. Im not so sure though. To me the terrier dosnt look like a friendly Terry running to my sister, partly because no one ever runs to my sister, but to me it looks like a fierce male dog running to defend its territory. I coast closer to Salina, and then im sure. I tumble off my bike and shove Salina out of the way. She faceplants into the grass. "Dannjelle!!" I pick up a stick and try to fend off the vicious dog, but it snaps in a matter of seconds, and the terrier's jaws close on my leg. It jerks and pulls, and i topple onto the ground, my head smacking into the sidewalk. I hear Salina scream, and i hear running feet, and i have just time to think, *dumb sis. Salina's too scared to throw a stick* before darkness falls.----------------------------------------------------------I wake, and my first thought is, *why is there a flashlight shining in my eyes?* My second is that my head feels filled of helium. My third, *why is Salina so dumb?* I drift in and out of conciousness, only gradually realizing that i am in a hospital. Eventually, i wake fully. My mother and father are standing by the bed, talking to a docter, worried expressions on their faces. When she sees that im awake, Mother bursts into tears. Father tries akwardly to comfort her, and the doctor leans down to me. "Youre awake." Its not a question. "It was very brave of you, Dannjelle, to save your sister from that terrier." He wont look directly at me, and i realize he must have bad news. "You had a nasty concussion." I try to ask him what the matter is, but i still have trouble forming words. He sighs. "Dannjelle, the terrier broke your back." As he says the words, i notice that i cant feel my legs. That shouldnt be possible. I distinctly remember the terrier snapping onto my calf. It should be on fire right now, but i dont feel a thing. Then the doctor's words hit me full force, and i find my voice. "Y-you mean i wont be able to walk?" I cry, my voic rising. "Not ever?" "No, Dannjelle." The doctor says sadly. "Not ever." My mother sobs into Father's shoulder. I sink back down onto the bed, almost unable to accept it. Then Father steps forward. "You saved your sister." He says quietly. He dosnt say anything else, and i realize hes right. I fall back asleep with that one thought dancing thorough my head.

I loved his books. A modern day warrior who served his country with honor and provided a glimpse at his world through his novels. I’m going to miss him. God bless.
