3.5 I’m always curious about devotionals with time promises. I remember when I first became a Christian almost 20 years ago, my first devotional was called 15 MInutes With God and greatly impacted my faith and developing a devotional time. (Sidenote: I wonder what my thoughts would be on that devotional now. I don’t recall anything too controversial, but two decades is plenty of time to change thoughts and views on theology. I’ll keep y’all posted if I do :)). This pocket-ish size devotional takes a look through Psalms and the devotionals are encouraging. Going through the themes the author of the Psalm wrestled with in a short devo, including a prayer for the reader and ending with questions for the reader to think on in their personal life, this makes for an engaging devotional. One minor thing I wish would have been done differently is to include the full scripture reading along with the devotional. It’s not a major thing (since Bible apps and access to Bibles are in abundance), but more of a preference. Overall, if you’re looking for a gift book or a devotional for yourself, this one is worth checking out. (Thank you to BookLook Bloggers for a copy of the book. All views expressed are my own.)

10 Minutes in the Word: Psalms is a nice combination of gift book and devotional. It is written to be easily digested in a short amount of time, but with enough thought behind each entry to provide depth for the reader. With the many praises and cries of sorrow and for help in it, Psalms is a good book for a devotional focus. There are 46 separate devotions in this book, and they work there way through the book of Psalms. Each entry follows the same basic format: there is a key Bible Verse (or two or three) from the larger passage that the entry is based upon. Next is a 1-2 page devotional presentation, relating the passage to today. This is followed by a short prayer based on the key points of the passage. Finally, there are questions for reflection, centered around the message and passage. Some examples of devotional topics include: The Firm Counsel of God; A Beggar at God's Throne; God's Guidance; Make a Joyful Noise; and Hide His Word in Your Heart. Because much of Psalms is David (and others) laying his heart bare before God, the topics can feel a little weighty, so if that is not what you are looking for, you may want to try something else. As a devotional reader, I appreciate these shorter 5-10 minute devotions, as they are perfect for reading in the morning when getting ready for work. They provide insight into the wisdom of the book of Psalms, and the questions are a jump start for thinking about how I can apply the ideas to my life. There is another book in this 10 Minutes in the Word series that focuses on Proverbs. I liked that book much better than this one. I'm not sure exactly why. I might be the content; I much prefer the wisdom of Proverbs to some of the heavy emotion of the Psalms. I also found the writing style to be tougher with the Psalms. The entries I read did not seem to flow as well; I found myself having to reread portions multiple times. Overall, I would recommend 10 Minutes in the Word: Psalms to anyone looking for a devotional with short but deep devotions to help grow your relationship with Jesus Christ. While this wasn't a book that I found I enjoyed, I'm sure there are many readers who would like the style presented by the author(s). I received a review copy of this book from the BookLook Bloggers program in exchange for an honest review.

“The psalms are loved and memorized by so many because of their relatability in addressing many of life’s most significant questions,” the introduction states in the book, 10 Minutes in the Word: Psalms. ~ What ~ At one-hundred-and-ninety-two-pages, this small hardbound targets men and women seeking a short devotional taken from the Psalms. Using the New International Version of the Holy Bible, forty-six chapters cover the one-hundred-and-fifty chapters. A fill-in ownership page, table of contents, introduction, and notes, as well as a ribbon marker, complete the book. In this condensed book, from one to several Psalms are included in each of the chapters that cover four pages. After a title, a couple of Bible verses are written out, followed by instructions to read specific Psalms. Two pages cover the topic, usually first discussing what the verses mean and who wrote them, ending with an application to the reader. A prayer and highlighted reminder tip complete the chapter. Some topic titles include He is Your Rock (Psalm 18), Fear of the Lord (Psalms 34-37), Restoration (Psalms 51-54), Do Not Be Fooled (Psalms 72-74), Make a Joyful Noise (Psalms 79-81), All His Benefits (Psalms 103-104), Songs of Ascent (Psalms 130-134), and Victory is Coming (Psalms 144-146). ~Why ~ I like that every chapter of Psalms is included and in numerical order in the book. Having a little background information about who wrote the psalms and why is educational and interesting as most may think the book was only written by David, which it was not. One example I enjoyed was Psalms 119 by David, titled Hide His Word in Your Heart, reminding us to hide God’s Word in our heart. The devotional is about God’s amazing and powerful Word, calling us to seek and search for Him in Scriptures. The prayer is about diligently reading the Bible and yearning for the Lord’s guidance with the tip being about making God a top priority. ~ Why Not ~ Those who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ may not appreciate this read. This is not an in-depth devotional so may be best for new believers and not replace daily reading of the Bible. Some may not care for the referred Bible version. ~ Wish ~ Not a fan of the NIV, I wish other Bible versions were offered in this lovely gift book. ~ Want ~ If you are looking for a classy gift for someone special who loves reading about the Psalms, this would make a thoughtful choice if you like the NIV. Thanks to Book Look Bloggers for this complimentary book that I am under no obligation to review.
