Overview

This set includes some of Dexter Gordon's early recorded work, covering the years 1946 to 1947, and features the emerging tenor sax great on sides with Russell Jacquet & His Yellow Jackets, Benny Carter & His Orchestra, two takes (one is really only a 20-second false start) with fellow tenor Wardell Gray on their classic sax duel called "The Chase," and two sessions with Gordon as a bandleader, one heading a quartet and one fronting a quintet. There are multiple alternate takes presented for most of these cuts, and that repetition means that this isn't an ideal album for those new to Gordon, who will probably be better served starting with his later Blue Note material from the late '50s and early '60s, but as an archival document for fans and collectors, this set serves a very useful function.
