Overview

Featuring the same dread mix of dub, DJ, and vocal tracks heard on Blood & Fire's first sampler Dubwise and Otherwise, 2 Heavyweight offers 16 more echoplex-soaked gems, giving air to the smoky underbelly of '70s reggae. While this music was popular in Jamaica upon release, it was overshadowed on the international stage by Bob Marley's rise to fame. Standouts include DJ cuts like I Roy's "Late Hour," the Congos' bubbly harmony track "The Wrong Thing," and Phillip Fraser's weighty vocal number "You're No Good (Disco Mix)." The real attraction here, though, is the many dub tracks. The best of these were mixed by dub originator King Tubby, including highly innovative tracks from his collaborations with producer Glen Brown (Termination Dub 1973-1979) and protégé Prince Jammy (Dub Gone 2 Crazy). Special mention also goes to Scientist & Soul Syndicate's "Dub Bible" and Tubby and the Santic Allstars' "Shooter Dub." Along with this last track, there are six additional cuts (mostly alternate mixes) aired for the first time on this compilation, including material by I Roy and fellow DJ Jah Stitch. The sound is top-notch and the high musical standard never lags. Add many choice, Bunny Lee-produced numbers and the fine work of respected Jamaican studio band the Aggrovators, among others, and you have a very worthwhile compilation. Both the budget-line Blood & Fire samplers are excellent, but this collection takes the prize for its slightly better track selection.
