The 20 songs on Double Play's 50's Flashback collection are an interesting mix of rockers, ballads, and smooth pop, providing listeners with a pretty decent picture of what pop music sounded like during that time. Ranging from the wild rockabilly of Jerry Lee Lewis to the silly kiddie pop of the Chordettes, the mix covers a lot of ground. You get rockin' instrumentals like Link Wray's "Rumble," the Champs' "Tequila," and Sandy Nelson's "Teen Beat," teen idol ditties like Frankie Avalon's "Venus," doo wop from the Crests ("16 Candles"), rockabilly from Carl Perkins ("Blue Suede Shoes"), country from Patsy Cline ("Walkin' After Midnight"), and syrupy pop ballads like Jack Scott's "My True Love" and Andy Williams' "The Hawaiian Wedding Song." Maybe not the best of the '50s (no Elvis, no R&B), but a fun listen at a good price. For someone who wants a taste of what the '50s sounded like, this would be a decent place to start.
