Overview

The instant #1 bestseller.

“This taut and terrifying book is among the most closely observed accounts of Donald J. Trump’s shambolic tenure in office to date."
- Dwight Garner, The New York Times

Washington Post
national investigative reporter Carol Leonnig and White House bureau chief Philip Rucker, both Pulitzer Prize winners, provide the definitive insider narrative of Donald Trump's unique presidency with shocking new reporting and insight into its implications.

“I alone can fix it.” So went Donald J. Trump’s march to the presidency on July 21, 2016, when he accepted the Republican presidential nomination in Cleveland, promising to restore what he described as a fallen nation. Yet over the subsequent years, as he has undertaken the actual work of the commander in chief, it has been hard to see beyond the daily chaos of scandal, investigation, and constant bluster. It would be all too easy to mistake Trump’s first term for one of pure and uninhibited chaos, but there were patterns to his behavior and that of his associates. The universal value of the Trump administration is loyalty - not to the country, but to the president himself - and Trump’s North Star has been the perpetuation of his own power, even when it meant imperiling our shaky and mistrustful democracy.

Leonnig and Rucker, with deep and unmatched sources throughout Washington, D.C., tell of rages and frenzies but also moments of courage and perseverance. Relying on scores of exclusive new interviews with some of the most senior members of the Trump administration and other firsthand witnesses, the authors reveal the forty-fifth president up close, taking readers inside Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation as well as the president’s own haphazard but ultimately successful legal defense. Here for the first time certain officials who have felt honor-bound not to publicly criticize a sitting president or to divulge what they witnessed in a position of trust tell the truth for the benefit of history.

This peerless and gripping narrative reveals President Trump at his most unvarnished and exposes how decision making in his administration has been driven by a reflexive logic of self-preservation and self-aggrandizement - but a logic nonetheless. This is the story of how an unparalleled president has scrambled to survive and tested the strength of America’s democracy and its common heart as a nation.

A well written recap of the Trump presidency to date. Anyone who has been following the news will know most of this information and will have already made up their mind. I found the level of detail, and seeing the chronology all in one book very helpful in understanding the individual players in this White House drama. I doubt this book will change anyone's minds (note the different reviews) but it is a worthwhile read. Highly recommended.

This is a good overview of President Donald Trump's ethically problematic conduct during his first three years in office as viewed by key figures in his cabinet. It's nothing that anyone who's been following reputable news sources wouldn't already know but it's a decent primer for how the stage was set for his 2019 impeachment, with Trump acting like a classic narcissistic manager faking his way through a job he's entirely unqualified for, taking all the credit while using, destroying and abandoning a series of masochistic enablers.

Excellent book written fairly and evenly. It's also a depressing story about the totally unhinged man running this country.

This book is an accurate chronological reporting of the events surrounding the 45th President's first 3 years in office - everything up to the July 25th, 2019 phone call to Ukraine's President Zelensky. It includes 16 pages of end-note citations. There is absolutely no political bias on the part of Rucker or Pulitzer prize-winning Leonnig. These two straight-shooting journalists have written a piece of required reading for future generations of political scientists and historians studying the failure of the Constitution's system of political checks and balances, the manner in which dictators come to power, and the impending demise of a political party.

This book begins from the beginning of the end in Presidential actions and represents how our country can loose focus and respect on the world stage. To go from President Obama with his calm demeanor and knowledge to this current person is a major fall. I had forgotten some of the crazy that has happened because it is a daily occurrence of crazy. I look forward to reading the rest of this book but really look forward to the end of this ridiculous presidency.

A book every American citizen should read before our November 2020 election. This book was very well written. I follow politics regularly and this brought back in vivid detail why it is so important for us to have a fair election and how important it is to get Donald Trump out of the White House. It is up to each of us to save this country's democracy for our future generatiions.

I am a self- confessed hidtory buff. At 82, I have witnessed three empeachment trials. As closely as I follow the news, in this book I was reminded of how we becom enured of disturbing tweets and unorthodox behavior in the Oval office. Though I am skeptical of anonymous sources, there is much corrabiration. I was a registered Republican for. 30 years and still am in principle. I add this only to clarify my bias when I recommend this book. It is also an easy read!
