You can sum up Raul Malo's second covers album in one word: "countrypolitan." Paying homage to the lush productions of Billy Sherrill and Owen Bradley, the onetime Mavericks frontman focuses on a country music that's almost diametrically opposed to the rootin'-tootin' honky-tonk sound of his old outfit. Malo, whose impeccable pipes are a modern-day equivalent of Nashville Sound regulars Jim Reeves or Charlie Pride, dips into crooner mode on these sophisticated productions of much rougher source material: two from Hank ("Cold Cold Heart" and "Take These Chains From My Heart"), two from Dwight ("Pocket of a Clown" and "It Only Hurts Me When I Cry") as well as songs identified with Ray Price and Elvis Presley. Not everyone loves the plush, mid-tempo swing of the Nashville Sound (Chet Atkins called it "the sound of money"), but fans of Patsy Cline and her ilk are sure to be swept up, up, and away by Malo's manly take on country's softest strains.

Wonderful album! Raul Malo's voice is unequaled in the music industry today and his interpretations of these classic songs are fantastic! I am particularly fond of For the Good Times, Pocket of a Clown and his jazzy, swing rendition of Cold, Cold Heart! After Hours is a MUST HAVE CD!
If you are looking for the Raul Malo of "The Mavericks" here, you are in the wrong place! He failed to do justice to any of the songs here. He thought he could just pulled it off on the strength of his voice alone. He missed the most important ingredients...his emotional response to these songs. The tempo is the same throughout his renditions..it is yawn-inducing. You wished he could just for once let his hair down and flow or swing with the melodies. Soulless, uninspiring and rigid was his poor imitations of the originals. He could learn from the likes of Michael Buble' and Bobby Vinton. I would file this one under "lounge music" at best!
I thought last year's "Your Only Lonely" was the pinnacle of smooth stylings by Mr. Raul Malo. But "The Voice" has surpassed himself in this just released salute to country standards. My current favorites, which change daily with this album, are Dwight Yokam's upbeat "Pocket of a Clown" and Roger Miller's sultry "Husbands and Wives". I can't wait for Raul's Christmas album, "It's a Marshmellow World and other Favorites", to be released this September. Nothing like Mr. Malo's fantastic voice to put you in the mood. I'm purchasing multiple copies of both new albums to give as gifts for friends and family.
this has to be the best cd i have ever heard you just have to listen to it wow its awsom
Raul Malo and his incredible voice have found a way to highlight the beauty of the melody and deliver the message of the lyrics to open a non-country fans' ears to some fabulous songs. His take on these gems is simple and clear - his band is wonderful and the addition of Jim Hoke (LOVE the clarinet!) rounds out the 10 great cuts. I've been devouring this album since the 7/17 release and am finding my favorite jumping from song to song. If you're a country fan - listen and hear the beauty of these songs. If you're not a country fan - listen and hear the beauty of these songs.
To write a review for Raul Malo's cd AFTER HOURS is probably one of the most confortable things to write about. Raul did it again. He took his wonderful voice and explored some songs that are just down right great to here. Weather your crusing in your car and want a relaxed ride or a romantic moment that needs some awsome music with no effort or no stress Raul's voice delevers in this cd. His voice is clear, and with every song his emotions just come thru. One of the neatest things about Raul's voice is that it seems to change depending on what song he is singing. His voice blends very well with his song selections. I would recommend this cd ,my two very favorite songs are "Its crying time again" and "Cold Cold Heart" folks you just can't get much better then this. He has got the voice and the personality to deliver a great romantic song.
Marvelous collection of some country standards, reinterpreted with a smoky late-night vibe. Buy copies for yourself and all your friends. You (and they) will be glad you did! (And if you ever get the chance to see Raul and his band live, GO!!! Trust me on this one.)
Raul Malo's voice is sigh...Mere words cannot do it justice! But once you hear it, you are never the same. No one has the ability to convey emotion in a song the way he does. Every note has you feeling the promise of love the heartche of loss... I have not stopped listening to it since it arrived. The choice of songs is wonderful and his interpretations stirring and memorable. His band does a terrific job they give just the right amount of support, always allowing that voice to shine through. Just a fabulous voice, beautiful songs, great musicians nothing getting in the way! I bet Mr. Malo's version of ""Now and Then" There's a Fool Such As I" has Elvis smiling out there somewhere in approval! The unexpected bounce to "Cold Cold Heart" just re-invents this classic! There is such an aching beauty to his version of "Husbands and Wives" the emotion in the voice playing against the lilting accompaniment. Just gorgeous. I mean no disrespect to the artists who performed these tunes before but once you have heard Mr. Malo's version, you cannot go back. Fabulous collection! Buy it for yourself and for anyone you love!
