Overview

You don't have to be a fan of the TV show or a Vonda Shepard nut who already owns the series' previous two companion albums (Songs from Ally McBeal and Heart and Soul: New Songs from Ally McBeal) to enjoy Ally's fun-filled Christmas album. Soulful pop singer Shepard, the "musical voice of Ally McBeal," offers up seven passionate performances of such holiday classics as "This Christmas," "Silver Bells," and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." In addition, pop singer Macy Gray lends her distinctive purr to the lovely "Winter Wonderland" (which also appears on Rosie O'Donnell's Another Rosie Christmas), while several of the show's stars contribute memorable performances of their own. Leading lady Calista Flockhart sweetly sings the Eartha Kitt favorite "Santa Baby," while Jane Krakowski and Lisa Nicole Carson supply lively versions of "Run, Rudolph, Run," and "Santa Claus Got Stuck in My Chimney." New to the cast in 2000, Robert Downey Jr. lends an astoundingly good vocal to a gorgeous rendition of Joni Mitchell's "River" and also duets with Shepard on "White Christmas." Even Ally naysayers may find themselves won over by this fresh, charming take on familiar Christmas classics.

This is one Christmas album that I truly love, from beginning to end, even with the one weak track, in my opinion, by Macy Gray.  Vonda Shepard is an amazing talent, and she packs several songs on this album, each one better than the next.  Several of the stars from the TV show put in their talent at the microphone as well, although I felt that Lisa Nicole Carson got the short end of the stick.  She should have had at least one other song!  Jane Krakowski does a fantastic job on her two songs, making them both sultry and fun at the same time.  And Santa Baby is perfect for Calista Flockhart's main character.  My all time favorite song on this album is Robert Downey Jr's rendition of River.  He sounds like he's channelling The Boss here, and it's incredible!  Even though this show is over, I continue to come back to the soundtracks over and over, and at Christmas time, this one is always in my playlist.
