From the creator of the blockbuster Sandman series. . . After an early release from prison due to his wife's accidental death, Shadow is recruited as a bodyguard by a mysterious grifter who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. Thus begins a wild road trip in which Shadow and Wednesday will be swept up into a conflict as old as humanity itself. For beneath the placid surface of everyday life a war is being fought -- and the prize is the very soul of America. As unsettling as it is exhilarating, American Gods is a dark and kaleidoscopic journey deep into myth and across an America at once eerily familiar and utterly alien. NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER WINNER OF THE HUGO, NEBULA & BRAM STOKER AWARDS.

I love mythology, which makes me predisposed to love this book. But I do think it's one of Gaiman's best books, and recommend Gaiman newbies read Neverwhere first, if you're planning to read them both.
