Amy is the nickname of violinist Ana-Maria Lungu, as well as the title of her debut CD on Chromart Classics, and this live recording is her personal exploration of both popular violin pieces and less familiar music from her native country, Romania. The best-known selections include Rachmaninov's perennial "Vocalise," Massenet's "Méditation from Thaïs," Fauré's "Après un rêve," Toselli's "Serenata," and John Williams' "Theme from Schindler's List," but Lungu's program also introduces several works by Romanian composers, such as Grigoras Dinicu, Ciprian Porumbescu, and the violinist's father, Ioan Lungu. Accompanied by Christoph Weinhart, who is alert to the many changes in tempo and nuances of expression, Lungu plays with great energy and fire, and the moods vary from the sweet lyricism of Ioan Lungu's "Träumerei" to the throbbing passion of Jo Knümann's "Rumänisch." However, there are slight intonation problems that distract, and the shallow sound of the recording gives Lungu and Weinhart little presence or warmth in what seems a drafty recital hall. On the whole, this is a colorful and entertaining recital, but rather light in substance and expression.
