Asian Dance introduces readers to the rich variety of dance traditions of India, Thailand, Java, Bali, China, and Japan. Readers will learn how such variety grew out of each culture's worldviews -- for example, the influence of Hindu deities on the poses and themes that typify Indian dance; the influence of Hindu movement arts and the role of nature on the dances of Thailand; and the Hindu-Buddhist religious tradition of dance that has so influenced the dances of Bali. Readers will also learn how the dance traditions of India and Tibet traveled along the Silk Road to China, resulting in the cross-fertilization and borrowing of dance traditions across this broad swath of the globe.
