'I got very lost. I was still a lost little boy and I didn't know how to cope'

There are many things people don't know about me and maybe when they read about those things they will have an understanding of the journey I have been on and why I've made the mistakes I have.

Nothing that has happened in my adult life makes much sense if you don't know what life was like for me growing up. I have to go back to the boy, because he can tell you a lot more than I can...

In this book James shares his struggles with mental health issues which led to drug-abuse, and how he dealt with the feelings of intense pressure and loneliness that accompanied his sudden rise to fame. Back to the Boy gives an insight into the life of one of the most exciting musicians of today, and how his experiences are reflected in the blend of raw emotion and passion in his music. This is a story of hope and self-discovery to inspire those who have ever hit rock-bottom and managed to pick themselves up again.

This book is EPIC! It was refreshingly honest and really shined a light on the mental health issues that plague so many of us. Especially since mental health seems to be a taboo/of subject topic that is uncomfortable to discuss and most often swept under the rug. Seems like its only discussed in hushed tones or by the news after a devastating tragedy I sincerely appreciated James' transparency throughout the entire book. During so many of the chapters I felt like he was writing about my life... I've had to put the book down many times ad say to myself "is that even possible" moments where his thoughts and actions have mirrored my own. Its incredibly hard to have an intimate part of your life broadcast to millions of people on TV and Social Media. Speaking from my own experience, life's unscripted, yet people seem so quick to judge without knowing all of the facts. Everyone has an expert opinion that’s not based on actual fact or even truth. All of the worlds a stage and everyone’s a judge. Strangers who tune in become “couch – judge/jurors/executioners.” No matter how hard we portray how awesome and put-together our lives are on our social media accounts. (Yes, myself included!) We all have skeletons and demons. We all have silent inner personal battles that we struggle with daily. We all have heartache, rejection, suffer from loss, loneliness, additions, mental health issues… the list goes on. We smile on the outside, but feel like we’re dying on the inside. We put on our “I’m Just Fine” face, smile and kept going. People from all walks of life, in and out of the public eye go through the same stuff. We all have one thing in common, we're human and we all deserve second chances and forgiveness. James has so very eloquently expressed his innermost thoughts and feelings. It was raw, real and totally relatable. I am in awe of him. This book is spectacular.
