Typically, Sun is known for its high-octane rockabilly, blues, and country, not for its ballads. Bear Family attempts to throw conventional wisdom off track with their 2011 set Sun Ballads 1953-1962, which is nothing more than three discs of slow ones from Sun singers famous and obscure. Far from following the conventional, this set throws a few genuine rarities into the mix: it's not for the casual fan of Elvis, Cash, and the Killer, but rather the Sun fan who thinks they already know it all but are hoping to be proven wrong, a challenge this set meets admirably.
