Chapter OneWITNESSING THE IMPOSSIBLE
Picture this: you've just finished talking with a powerful friend, when suddenly, without fanfare, he calmly ascends - goes up before your eyes and vanishes into the sky! No rocket, no helicopter, no balloon! He just goes up!
Impossible? For a human being, yes. But not for someone who has just identified himself as the Almighty God.
The scene described above is in Genesis 17:22 of the Bible. God has just been talking with Abram. During that conversation he changed Abram's name to Abraham and Sarai's name to Sarah. Then he announced the shocking new covenant of circumcision. Every man child born in Abraham's house or bought with money was to be circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. This was to be an everlasting covenant.
Adam Clarke's Commentary on the Bible has this to say about Genesis 17:22: "God went up from Abraham. Ascended evidently before him so that he had the fullest proof that it was no human being ... that talked with him. Had not Abraham, his son ... and all the family been fully convinced that this thing [circumcision] was of God, they could not have submitted to it. A rite so painful and repugnant ... could never have sprung up in the imagination of man."
It appears that God deliberately allowed his gravity-defying ascent to be seen by Abraham so this chosen servant would have confidence to obey his seemingly bizarre directive.
Another miraculous ascent is witnessed
After both Abraham and his son Isaac had died, Isaac's son Jacob had a strange encounter with God. Jacob was on his way back to Beer-sheba from Padan-Aram with his family, livestock and possessions. Suddenly, after sending them all across the brook at Jabok, the lone Jacob found himself wrestling with a powerful stranger. The struggle continued until daybreak. The stranger had put Jacob's thigh out of joint, but Jacob wouldn't quit. Finally, realizing that his opponent was no mere human, Jacob demanded, and received, a blessing. God, with whom Jacob had been wrestling, changed his name from Jacob to Israel, saying: "As a prince hast thou power with God, and men, and hast prevailed" (Genesis 32:28).
Some time later Jacob was told by God to go back to Beth-el where God had first appeared to him. Jacob was to dwell there and make an altar to God. This Jacob did unquestioningly. He brought his whole family back to Beth-el (House of God) and built an altar there.
Then God appeared to Jacob again, and said: "Thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name." And he called his name Israel. And God said unto him: "I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins, and the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land."
"And God went up from him in the place where he had talked with him" (Genesis 35:13).
Once again a face to face conversation between a man, Jacob, and God ended abruptly, as God lifted off, unaided by any visible means of propulsion. Adam Clarke, in his Commentary on the Bible, makes the following statement about Genesis 35:13:
"This was not a vision, nor a strong mental impression, but a real manifestation of God. Jacob saw and heard Him speak, and before his eyes He went up - ascended to heaven. This was no doubt the future Savior, the Angel of the Covenant."
A fiery ascent as two awe-struck people watch
During the chaotic time when there was no king in Israel, the people did evil in God's sight several times. After one of these lapses the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years. But there came a time when God apparently thought their punishment was enough. He arranged, in a very unusual way, for a deliverer.
The angel of the LORD appeared to the barren wife of an Israelite man named Manoah. He said, "Behold now, thou art barren and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son." He told the woman not to drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing. Her son was to be a Nazarite from the womb. No razor must touch his head. He would begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines.
After this encounter the woman told her husband Manoah about it, and he "intreated the LORD" to send back the man of God to teach them how they should raise this remarkable child. "And God hearkened to the voice of Manoah, and the angel of God came again." He repeated all the instructions he had given to the woman, and was about to leave. But Manoah begged him to stay until a meal could be prepared for him.
The angel of the LORD refused to eat, saying instead that a burnt offering must be made to God. "So Manoah took a kid with a meat offering, and offered it upon a rock unto the LORD: and the angel did wonderously; and Manoah and his wife looked on."
"For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground."
And Manoah said unto his wife, "We shall surely die, because we have seen God." (Judges 13: 8-22).
NOTE: The son born to Manoah, and dedicated from the womb to be a Nazarite, was the mighty Samson. Even people who rarely open the Bible are familiar with the famous story of Samson and Delilah.
Although Delilah tried many times to discover the secret of Samson's great strength he stubbornly refused to reveal it. Finally he told her that no razor had ever touched his head. "If I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak." (Judges 16:17).
That was all Delilah needed. She told the lords of the Philistines, and received a payoff from them. Then she got Samson to sleep on her knees, called a man, and he shaved off the seven locks of his head. When Samson awoke his great strength was gone. The Philistines put out his eyes, brought him to Gaza, bound him with fetters of brass, and made him grind in the prison house.
But Samson's hair began growing again. When the lords of the Philistines gathered together to rejoice and offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, Samson was brought out. They wanted to make sport of him. The blind Samson was placed between the pillars upon which the house stood, and a lad helped him feel them. This "house" evidently was enormous, because there were about 3,000 merrymakers on its roof! (Judges 16:27).
Then Samson called unto God and prayed "only this once" to be strengthened so he could be avenged against the Philistines for his blinded eyes. And Samson grasped the two middle pillars supporting the house, saying, "Let me die with the Philistines." And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords and upon all the people who were therein. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life" (Judges 16:30).
The most famous of all ascensions
After the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb before daybreak on the first day of the week. She saw that the stone had been rolled away from the sepulchre of Jesus. While she talked with two angels in white Jesus spoke to her, but she didn't recognize him. Then he said, "Mary," and suddenly she knew it was Jesus. She said, "Rabboni!"
Then Jesus said, "Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren and say unto them, I ascend to my Father and your Father, and to my God, and your God" (John 20:16-17).
"That same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith to them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he showed them his hands and his side." (John 20:19).
At his resurrection Jesus had once again become an immortal God Being. He had ascended in the morning, met with God the Father, and returned to his disciples on earth the same day at evening!
Forty days later, after being seen many times by the apostles and telling them things about the Kingdom of God, Jesus was with them at the mount called Olivet. He commanded them to stay in Jerusalem and wait for the promise of the Father, "which ye have heard of me."
"Ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days hence," he said.
The apostles asked if he would then restore the kingdom to Israel. But he said, "It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Spirit is come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."
"And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight"
This second ascension of Jesus was witnessed by the apostles, plus others who had come out from Jerusalem (Jesus was always followed by crowds), plus two men in white apparel (angels). There may have been several hundred individuals who beheld the ascension of Jesus.
The two men in white apparel told the crowd, "Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven."
Jesus will be back.
An astonishing dual resurrection-ascension coming soon!
This has not happened yet, and is not likely to happen until the temple of God is rebuilt in Jerusalem. It will take place between the sounding of the sixth and seventh trumpets of Revelation. At that point in history two special end-time witnesses will be appointed and given supernatural powers by God. They will prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days (3-1/2 years) clothed in sackcloth (Rev. 11:3).
These two witnesses are described, cryptically, as "the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth." A reference in Zechariah (Zechariah 4:14) identifies two olive trees as "the two anointed ones that stand before the LORD of the whole earth."
These two anointed witnesses - also called candlesticks, because they radiate spiritual light during their 3-1/2-year ministry - will have extraordinary powers. Like Moses and Aaron, they will be able to turn water to blood and smite the earth with plagues as often as they wish. They will also be able to shut off all rain during the 42 months. And if anyone tries to hurt them, fire ordered by the two witnesses will consume their enemies (Rev. 11:4-6).
After their allotted 3-1/2 years of preaching are finished the beast, an end-time military power, will arise, overcome the two witnesses, and kill them. Their deaths will cause such relief that people everywhere will begin celebrating, partying and giving gifts. The dead bodies of the two witnesses will be left in the street for 3-1/2 days
"Then, after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, 'Come up hither.'"
"And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them" (Rev. 11:12).
We can deduce that when these two dead human beings suddenly stood upon their feet, rose off the ground without any means of propulsion, and vanished into a cloud, that they were no longer humans. In all of human history, no flesh-and-blood person has ever risen, unaided, and ascended off the earth. But people, when they have become immortal members of the God family, will rise to the occasion.
A final great resurrection-ascension yet to come
As most people know, before Saul of Tarsus was an apostle he persecuted the followers of Jesus. Armed with orders from the chief priests, he was on his way to punish some of them in Damascus, when something astonishing happened. Suddenly a light stronger than the sun dazzled Saul's group and they fell to the ground. Saul was blinded.
Then the risen Jesus Christ spoke to Saul, saying in Hebrew: "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?"
When Saul asked, "Who art thou, Lord?" the voice said, "I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. I have appeared unto thee, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear to you."
Saul was stunned. He had been persecuting the risen Jesus! When Ananias came and restored his eyesight, Ananias said: "The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth."
Saul, also called Paul (Acts 13:9), responded at once. It is evident from his letter to the Galatians that he went directly to Christ; not to the apostles or any other human teachers.
"When it pleased God.... to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter."
When Paul went into Arabia did he go to Horeb, the mountain of God, where Moses had received the ten commandments? Was he, like Moses, taught by the God who was made flesh and dwelt among the Israelites? This seems quite likely, since he "conferred not with flesh and blood," and didn't see Peter or any other apostle for three years.
Paul also wrote to the Corinthians, saying: "I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago (whether in the body ... or out of the body, I cannot tell) ... caught up to the third heaven. He (obviously Paul himself) was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter"
(2 Corinthians 12:2-4).
Paul spoke of "the abundance of revelations" he had received during the time he spent in Arabia. Surely the most awesome and exciting of these revelations is in Paul's first letter to the Thessalonians:
"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord"
(1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).
This stunning description of the first resurrection pictures the second coming of Jesus Christ, the rising of both the dead and the living in Christ, their instantaneous change to immortal God Beings, and their glorious meeting with Christ in the air.
Paul could not possibly have dreamed up this amazing event which he described to church members in Thessalonica. The descending, shouting Christ! The rising of Christ's faithful ones from the dead! The sudden catching-away of living called-out ones! The glorious meeting with Christ in earth's atmosphere! Such a fantastic, once-in-eternity scene could never be imagined humanly; it had to be divinely revealed.
It must be stressed here that the dead in Christ will have been in their graves for lengthy periods of time: some for thousands of years, some for centuries, and some for just a few years. But they will not rise as skeletons, decaying bodies, or bloodless zombie-like beings. They will ascend as immortals. Their brethren in Christ who are still physically alive at Christ's coming will also be changed to immortals. These will be the 12,000 each of the twelve tribes of Israel who are sealed in their foreheads with the seal of the living God (Rev. 7:3) before the four symbolic winds of tribulation blow upon the earth.
These 144,000 Israelites are described again in Revelation 14. They are now immortals with God the Father's name in their foreheads. They stand with Christ the Lamb upon Mount Zion, ready to serve Him in the Kingdom of God. They are described as virgins, having never been defiled by women (false churches). They are sincere, straightforward, and without guile. They follow the Lamb wherever He goes. They are the firstfruits unto God and the Lamb (Rev. 14:4).
God Almighty is consistent. Through Isaiah, he said: "I am the LORD, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King." (Isaiah 43:15). God created 12-tribed Israel, already planning a major role for selected members of those 12 tribes, in the coming Kingdom of God on earth.
