Overview

Now that high school is over, Ari is dying to move to the big city with his ultra-hip band—if he can just persuade his dad to let him quit his job at their struggling family bakery. Though he loved working there as a kid, Ari cannot fathom a life wasting away over rising dough and hot ovens. But while interviewing candidates for his replacement, Ari meets Hector, an easygoing guy who loves baking as much as Ari wants to escape it. As they become closer over batches of bread, love is ready to bloom . . . that is, if Ari doesn’t ruin everything.

Writer Kevin Panetta and artist Savanna Ganucheau concoct a delicious recipe of intricately illustrated baking scenes and blushing young love, in which the choices we make can have terrible consequences, but the people who love us can help us grow.

This story is AMAZING! It truly is love. There’s friendship, love, baking, happiness, sadness, joy and sorrow, the blue hues of the illustrations match every emotion the character and readers feel. If you’re introducing someone to graphic novels (like I), it is the perfect story. Though be warned: you may be left wanting more! I applaud the creators/artists/writers on this masterpiece. I will definitely be recommending it to everyone I know!

My experience reading Bloom for the first 2/3 of the book: Oh, this is delightful! The characters are nuanced and believable (and lovable!), the story is engaging and full of humor and heart, and the art is just delicious. My experience of the final third of the book: I finished it in one sitting, hands shaking, getting choked up every few pages - OMG, what is going to happen to these characters that I've quickly grown to love?? This is such a beautiful creation. I wish I could spend more time (right now!) with Ari and Hector and Ari's parents and Hanna and the band...and I wish I could taste one of those family recipe sourdough rolls. Oh, wait...there's a recipe in the back...

This book was amazing. It had heart felt moments along with some cuter fluffy moments. In all honesty this book was absolutely amazing.

This book is super cute! It’s a casual MM romance that deals more with adjusting to life out of high school and figuring out what you want, and how to get it. So if you prefer your romance light, this could be a good pick for you. To be honest, I was hoping for more smooching. Hector is adorable and talented and immediately lovable. Someone I would definitely want to be friends with. He’s clearly a very positive person and does his best to bring up those around him. Ari, on the other hand, is a jerk. I’m sorry! He does have some growth at the end, but like, the very end. I really wanted to slap him. Totally a realistic character and I could understand where he was coming from, but my gourd. Hector’s too good for him. That aside, I still loved this and would recommend it for anyone looking for a sort of slice-of-life, low-key MM romance, struggles-of-growing-up, bakery-appreciation graphic novel! There’s even a real live bread recipe in the back and a playlist. I will definitely keep my eye out for more from these two!

I read the entire book the same day I bought it. I absolutely love the story between Ari and Hector! As a gay man, It is nice to read a love story that I can connect to personally. I only wish this novel came out when I was a teenager, it would have meant so much to the younger me to see that love was possible and without shame.
