Overview

Since making one of the truly brilliant mid-American guitar records ever, 1992's CAN YOU FLY, Freedy Johnston has taken his high-lonesome singing and dark, literary sensibility out of the indie-rock idiom and into the world of genteel Elvis Costello-esque song poetry. True to its title, his fifth album, BLUE DAYS BLACK NIGHTS, is the kind of album that sends its hero wandering the waterfront at 3 a.m. searching for reflections of his long-gone darling(s) in the still, black waters. "It's a lonely kind of thing I do," Freedy sings against a watery guitar and a deep-blue melody on "Pretend It's Summer." That song sets the tone for a collection of tunes that make Leonard Cohen look like Donna Summer, from the impossibly delicate "Underwater Life" to the beautifully detailed "Moving on a Holiday." Rarely do these songs see the sun and rarely do they need to: Freedy's subtle sense of craft, plaintive quaver, and naturalist attention to lyrical detail keep the slow, spare, and suggestive folk-rock tunes adrift, even when you think he's about to go down and never be heard from again.
