Christmas 1984 is the first holiday album the Mannheim Steamroller released, and it remains their definitive work. Chip Davis never strayed from the clean, airy instrumental style that he exhibits here (and earlier perfected on his Fresh Aire albums), but it is here where it all sounded fresh. It's also where he had his best selection of songs, tackling a variety of classic carols like "Deck the Halls," "We Three Kings," "Good King Wenceslas," "Wassail, Wassail," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," and "I Saw Three Ships." Some listeners never found the Mannheim formula that engaging, but anyone who his been captured by one of their holiday records should investigate Christmas 1984, which is where it all began.

Mannheim Steamroller is one of my favorites, and somehow I missed this one when it came out, so I was overjoyed to find it still available--a great Christmas present to myself!

Actually, it's not even half of what I'd give this album. More like 20 stars! If you've never heard the Steamroller before, you're missing out. All of their Christmas albums just blew me away - they're so good!

I remember being blown away by the recording of Deck the Halls when I first heard it at the age of 14. It's still a great recording, although it's impact has been diluted somewhat by its ubiquity. At Christmas time, it's hard to get away from all the radio ads and TV ads that use this as background music. It's still an exciting and interesting reinterpretation of the old familiar tune. What's nice is that the rest of the album delves into other textures, especially the second ''side'' (excuse the anachronism) where lutes and harpsichords predominate. Silent Night is lush and gorgeous, especially in its use of strings. Much of their more recent stuff repeats ideas that work well here, or water them down in New Agey cliches (sometimes hovering frighteningly close to elevator music) but this album is still a staple and joy to hear, around Christmas time.
