I think you'll like this book about a girl Cinderella and how she lives her painful life. At the end something good does happen. You'll have to read this book to find out what good happens in Cinderella.

This is the traditional tale, but updated with illustrations from Innocenti that indicate the story is taking place during the roaring 20's - flapper dresses, cloche hats, etc. None of the details in the text have been modernized, which makes the story vs. the illustrations cause a little bit of cognitive dissonance. Probably only for adults, though. I think the artwork is lovely, if a bit dark. I'm thinking this edition would most likely appeal to older kids/teens/adults because half of the fun of Cinderella for little girls is seeing her in a giant poofy prom-type dress. Cinderella's flapper-gown is beautiful but not exactly the prom-type. There's a lovingly drawn detail art of cavier and champagne, the 1920's-style vintage cars are gorgeous, the wedding scene divine. The art does seem like it would hold most appeal for an audience with a taste for vintage!

Creative Editions is one of my favorite publishing houses and Innocenti is one of the reasons why.

Age Appropriateness: PrimaryGenre: Already a classic fairy tale, Cinderella is an enchanted tale with many magical moments, such as when the fairy godmother turns a pumpkin into a golden coach. Cinderella is the herorin in this story, as she dreams of living happily ever after.

This is a classic retelling of the cinderella fairytale. What sets this one apart is the eloquent language of Amy Ehrlich and the generosity of forgiveness that Cinderella bestows upon her awful stepmother and stepsisters at the end of the story. Also, the delicate and lush illustrations of Susan Jeffers make this version quite memorable.

Got this one free from Barnes and Noble when the Cinderella movie came out. A very different look at Cinderella from the one you grew up by Walt Disney. The story was short and sweet but mainly focused on the fashion and beauty more than anything. I think I prefer the Grimm version of this one.
