Overview

Josh Groban, the 22-year-old heartthrob singer whose self-titled debut lit up the classical crossover charts for months on end, invites listeners to get Closer on his sophomore studio release (he has also issued a live album tied to a PBS special). Joining again with producer David Foster, Groban delivers another set of heartwarming Europop songs -- including some co-written by the young crooner himself -- that holds true to the endearing formula that drew in his large cadre of fans. Lush, atmospheric production underscores Groban's soulful singing -- and no doubt about it: this boy can sing -- and fans with a hunger for his rich, expressive baritone putting over touching ballads will not be disappointed. Yet the album mixes in other elements, too. World-music touches (such as a Spanish guitar on "My Confession") lace several of the numbers with exotic colors, while Joshua Bell's sweet-toned violin adds lovely spins and swirls to the sentimental "Mi Mancherai (Il Postino)," and the innovative duo Deep Forest help Groban break away from romantic ballads on the rhythm-driven "Never Let Go." Groban's voice has also developed new power and range, as shown by his solid vocal prowess on such numbers as "Per Te" and the gospel choir–backed "You Raise Me Up" (though labeling his singing "operatic" remains wishful thinking). And while the album is less a valiant departure than a satisfying follow-up to the promise of his debut, to Groban's many fans, that's no concession at all.

Although we haven't heard the whole CD, the cuts we have heard indicate that the whole thing will be extraordinary. Two have been posted on the fan website, and one was included on the CD enclosed with the DVD of the PBS concert.

All of Josh Groban's CD's are wonderful, including this one. His voice is captivating and the songs are beautiful! You will absolutely love this album! "Remember When It Rained" and "Oceano" are the two best songs. Also, you will never forget the beauty in "You Raise Me Up". This is an awesome CD for all ages!

I bought this album the first day it was available, but made the mistake of only buying one. I had to go back to Barnes and Noble to get three more (two sisters, one daughter). Of course it's for their Christmas presents. This CD is terrific with strong vocals from our favorite male artist of all time. The background music is lovely. Every selection is wonderful

This cd is awesome. When I saw him perform in the oscars he took my breath away, and I just couldn't wait to buy the cd. And now that I have it, it's on everyday. And the best thing about the cd is the musical, the intruments, and how they are used to make the most wonderful songs I have ever heard. You have GOT to get this CD. You won't regret it.

I can't stop listening to this album. The more I listen to it, the more I love it. Josh Groban's vocals are wonderful. No fan can go without this album.

I'll stick with Frank Sinatra, thank you very much.

This is nothing like his previous CD. "You raise me up" is the only hit here. His singing is still great but the songs aren't. There's nothing special about the song writing either. Please listen to the samples before you buy.

This is a very disappointing, especially compared to his debut album. He has an absolutely amazing voice and psudo-operatic pop is not the way to showcase it. His first album was great in showcasing his different styles but this takes it too far! I'll start buying his albums again if/when he begins to do real opera. Please, Josh, don't sell yourself short.

Josh Groban's CD "Closer" is definitely everything I've been waiting for in his new release. This CD has a different sound then his first release, but the sound compliments his voice just as well. I recommend "Closer" to anyone who loves Josh Groban or Classical music.

Josh Groban's sophomore album is truly a masterpiece. It showcases his improved vocal range, strength and richness of his voice. He was fantastic in his debut album. You wonder how could he improve and he certainly has. I hope he doesn't wait two years before his next album is released. Maybe a Christmas album next year? JanC

"Closer" is Josh Groban's second album, the follow-up to his 2001 self-titled album. I don't have the words to describe the album, it is inspiring. I have never been a fan of "Pop Opera" that's what I have titled his genre as. But since Josh Groban's 2001 self-titled album, I have been a loyal fan. He is truly talented and it is good to finally see a new face and sound in music. He isn't as intimidating as Andrea Bocelli or Sarah Brightman, artists which I might not have given a chance if I had not listened to both of Josh Groban's albums. He has a great talent which will take him to great heights and new frontiers. "Closer" is a bolder Josh, as seen on his first song, "Oceano," in the middle of the song there's a small solo with an electric guitar, which had not been seen on his previous album. Without a doubt my favorite song has got to be "Si Volvieras A Mi" the only Spanish track on the album. "Broken Vow" is a great heart break song. The album is full of heartfelt songs and I think that's what people need right now. People need something they can rely on to relax them without putting them to sleep, and this is just it. All in all the album is great, I can't wait to see him on tour!!!

I LOVE his voice. I always feel so happy when I am listening to him. I can give nothing but praise to this album(okay all of his albums).

His first CD was great but this one is just phenominal. Josh Groban is one of the most talented artist out there today.

Someone else said "too bad there aren't 6 stars"---I agree. I saw him on Oprah last year and fell in love with his voice. His music is absolutely fantastic. I would have never imagined myself liking his music, because I am a rock-obsessed music fan. He's got true talent. I'd do almost anything to be at one of his shows.

Josh Groben’s second album, “Closer,” fails to wow audiences the way his first album did. Josh has a sweet and sincere voice that is easy to fall in love with. But many of the songs on “Closer” sound embarrassingly similar to the first CD. The one song that stands out is “You Raise Me Up.” It is a single gem in a mesh of peppy songs that all sound the same. If you can get past the lack of originality, Josh’s voice still stirs powerful emotions and I recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates classical-styled music.

OMG! I love Josh Groban! He is so gifted with his voice and I love this album! My favorite track is "You Raise Me Up." I first fell in love with his voice when I heard "To Where You Are" on the radio. I cried as I was listening to it and couldn't wait to find out who the singer was. He is a true rising star!

First it was Barry Manilow, then Michael Bolton, then Kenny G., now Grobin. They perform schmaltzy material and emote in sickening fashion. They're like gum on your shoe. They are annoying and we can't get rid of them. This album is aweful! Nobody over the age of 12 should be subjected to this stuff. Why can't I give it no stars?

So far I've only heard 2 songs that were released on teh net from "CLOSER" and I have no doubt in my mind that this will be the best cd you EVER purchase! Josh is AMAZING. There are no words for his talent.
