Overview

2015 Winner of the Book Buyers Best Contest in Suspense/Mystery with Romantic Elements, and also the Readers' Choice Heart of Excellence for Romantic Suspense.

Physicist Scarlett Stone is the daughter of the man considered to be the most notorious Russian agent in FBI history. With her father dying in prison she's determined to prove he's innocent, but time is running out. Using a false identity, she gains access to the Russian ambassador's Christmas party, searching for evidence of a set-up.

Former Navy SEAL, now FBI Special Agent, Matt Lazlo, is instantly attracted to Scarlett but life is too complicated to pursue a politician's daughter. When he discovers she lied to him about her identity, he hunts her down with the ruthless efficiency he usually reserves for serial killers.

Not only does Scarlett's scheme fail, it puts her in the sights of powerful people who reward unwanted curiosity with brutality. The FBI—and Matt—aren't thrilled with her, either. But as agents involved in her father's investigation start dying, and the attempts to stop Scarlett intensify, Matt and his colleagues begin to wonder. Could they have a traitor in their midst?

As Scarlett and Matt dig for the truth they begin to fall passionately for one another. But the real spy isn't about to let anyone uncover their secrets, and resolves to remain firmly in the shadows—and for that to happen, Matt and Scarlett have to die.

About the Author

Toni Anderson is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, RITA® nominee, science nerd, professional tourist, dog lover, gardener, mom. Originally from a small town in England, Toni studied Marine Biology at University of Liverpool (B.Sc.) and University of St. Andrews (Ph.D.) with the intention she’d never be far from the ocean. Well, that plan backfired and she ended up in the Canadian prairies with her biology professor husband, two kids, a rescue dog, and two laid-back leopard geckos. Toni started writing while pregnant with her first child and never stopped. Her greatest achievements are mastering the Tokyo subway, climbing Ben Lomond, snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, and surviving fourteen Winnipeg winters (fingers crossed). She loves to travel for research purposes and was lucky enough to visit the Strategic Information and Operations Center inside FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. in 2016, and she also got to shove another car off the road during pursuit training at the Writer’s Police Academy in Wisconsin. Watch out world!

Fast paced keeps you reading. The characters all fit togeher nicely. I usually have the villain figured out just a few chapters into a book. This story has a twist. Enjoy!

J: This story is soooo good right from the very beginning!!! I could hardly put it down to eat lunch. Some of the characters were a bit much to keep up with but it did not take anything away from the story at all.

Good mystery/ spy novel that kept my interest throughout. Some of the love-at-first-sight stuff is a little nauseating but characters were likable and plot was well-developed.

Scarlett Stone is a smart woman who takes foolish chances. She is led by her heart into trying to exonerate her father, but ends up placing herself in the line of fire between Russian and American agents. I love that Anderson's heroines are often brilliant in their field, but when it comes to making some decisions the human frailties of emotion and passion trump good judgement. It opens the door for other things to happen, for the character to grow and find love, when the heroine can't be totally self-sufficient. Mystery, romance and action combine to make Cold Light of Day a great way to spend a few hours.
