Overview

Few bands are as willfully perverse as Mexican rock-rap outfit Molotov. Their first big hit, "Puto," was a homosexual-baiting jock-rock single that nonetheless became a gay club anthem throughout the Spanish-speaking world, and they've gone on to win a Latin Grammy with a south-of-the-border recasting of Sly Stone's "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey." Fittingly, this collection of covers bounds from the sublime to the ridiculous to the tasteless, often within the same song. The band, which includes an American-born drummer, segues from ridiculous in-jokes -- a cumbia version of the Misfits classic "I Turned into a Martian" and the title track's homage to Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus" -- to biting border commentary. Updating and translating Gil Scott Heron's seminal "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," Molotov assure a restive Mexican democracy, "You won't find your relatives shot dead in a ditch by the government." Elsewhere the focus is more on fun, paying homage to their heroes, the Beastie Boys, with "Chavas," a punk-rock reading of "Girls" from License to Ill, and cheeky rewrites, as with "Agüela," which combines the Clash's "Magnificent Seven" with Young MC's "Bust a Move." The best cover albums reveal something about the artist, and Con Todo Respeto, with its swaggering appropriation of Mexican and U.S. pop -- check out the mash-up of El Tri with ZZ Top -- shows a band that's as smart as it is snotty.
