COMING 2021...

I am that most pitied of women: a bride left at the altar. And yes, people stare. I'm a relative newcomer to Garnet Pass, Wyoming. No, that's not true, I'm a rank beginner. I only know a handful of people and two of them have moved away. Well, three, if you count my no-show, would-have-been husband, Max Holman. Where are you Max? And why, why, why?

Thank goodness it was to be a small affair. Best Man, Rusty Metzger, left to see if he could find the errant groom. Rusty and his wife, Charlotte (maid of honor), had delayed their move to Arizona by a day to stand up for us. Though he had resigned as Sheriff to take a better position in Tucson, Rusty still had pull and quickly checked local hospitals and emergency agencies for possible accidents, but with no luck.

Everyone who knew Max assured me he would never have stood me up on purpose, something must have happened to him. I hung on to that, even though I was perhaps more aware of Max's dark side. The deep crannies' of hurt, doubt, and uncertainties that lie hidden in all of us.

Jennie Colman, a new friend, is the bright spot in this whole dismal affair. She works at the Glory Hole restaurant and helped Charlotte with the food for the wedding reception that didn't happen. She's just the kind of crazy woman I need to be around. She makes me laugh. She loves exploring ghost towns, collects paintings of outhouses, and goes gold panning on occasional weekends. It helped that she was with me when the sheriff's office called to say that Max had been sighted in his pickup on the far side of the state, driving toward Sheridan. The time had come to accept that Max disappeared by choice, not accident. It hurt dreadfully.

Thankfully, Jennie's helping me with this last miserable job. Returning wedding presents. She offered to hand deliver the remaining few to locals, while I wrapped the three left to be mailed. I heard her car door slam.

About the Author

Raised in a Chicago suburb, author Carol Caverly married into a Wyoming pioneer ranch family. Yes, it was a bit of a culture shock, but she quickly grew to love the stark dry landscape and, most of all, the people. Now Carol enjoys writing mysteries set in the modern New Wild West she loves.
