The book's introduction detail how the cards were produced, analyzes the subject matter depicted on the cards, documents the history of several of the most prominent local photographers in the state whose work is found almost only on postcards, and traces the evolution and popularization of postcard photography.

About the Author

George Miller is a professor of English at the University of Delaware and a former Chair of the Department. Miller has collected and written about Delaware postcards for several decades, edited a Delaware historical society newsletter, and lectured throughout the state on Delaware history and postcards through the Delaware Humanities Forum. The author of seven books and over 200 articles, he has written extensively about postcards and American popular culture at the turn of 20th century. He co-authored Picture Postcards in the United States, 1893-1918 (Clarkson N. Potter, 1976), the definitive history of the American postcard, and A Pennsylvania Album (Penn State Univ. Press, 1979), a collection similar to this.
