Overview

"Doctor Zhivago* By Boris Pasternak—*Abridged by D. Vecchio" is a historical, romantic revision of Boris Pasternak's Nobel Prize winning book "Doctor Zhivago." Yuri Zhivago is an idealistic doctor and poet who acts as a reluctant witness to the momentous events surrounding the meteoric rise and inexorable corruption of Soviet Communism. His idyllic love for Lara, who is married to another, is persistently threatened by historical inevitability, which he must face with his own wife and family.

Because Pasternak's manuscript was secretly taken out of Russia, the speculation has been that the publisher wasn't able to give to him the final proofs for revision before publication. Therefore, a clear understanding of Pasternak's flow and intent was hampered. The difficulties of all translations are epitomized in the Italian saying "traduttore/traditore—translator/traitor."

In this shortened and abridged edition (definitions, maps, etc.), every effort was made to keep the significant names and locations of the original story as well as the historical timeline. The editor focused on the deletion of extraneous characters and esoteric dialogues. Also, convoluted and antiquated phrasing was simplified and updated to contemporary, conversational English.

This e-book will avail the reader of the "search" function when there are questions about "who's who" in the story. Characters have polysyllabic names that are: child (and diminutive), adult (and diminutive), patronymic, and surname. Also, pseudonyms are used. After Lenin's death in 1924, the dictator of the Soviet Union from 1929-53 was "Stalin," meaning "man of steel." When Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili escaped from his Siberian prison, he chose the name "Stalin" because that was the name of one of his prison guards.
