When Frank Black's band the Pixies dissolved in 1993, he delved into a series of solo albums that explored his favorite old obsessions: outer space, California, and screaming surf-rock. Although these albums never got the attention the Pixies enjoyed during alternative rock's glorious early days, each demonstrated Black's ability to craft irresistibly melodic tunes and play the hell out of them. You'd never know it listening to today's radio, but Black hasn't gone away, and he hasn't changed much. He's just gotten better, judging by Dog in the Sand. His big new band, the Catholics (seven fellows including Pixies' guitarist Joey Santiago) supersize Black's sound and give him new tools like pedal steel and banjo to convey his ideas. Surf guitar still washes in and out of his songs, but most of this album is built on bold rock riffs, and it unfolds in a rush of excitement. "Blast Off" is a typical, blood-rushing, Pixies-style rocker, but Black has other moods, too. "Llano Del Rio" is a soft Southwestern journey, and the California nightmare "St. Francis Dam Disaster" is "Wave of Mutilation" all grown-up and thoughtful, and beautiful, still.
