The cover of this book says it was a bestselling book of the year at one time. After opening it up and glancing through it, it't not hard to see why.

The pupose of the book is to get you to look at things, common situations we all come across everyday, like being criticized or being given more work than you can possibly finish, and see them a little differently. Believe it or not, it delivers- and in just a page or two at a time if you can believe that!

That's because the wisdom is definitely there, on every page, and it just plain makes sense. Many times I've read a chapter or two and thought, "Why didn't I think of that before?".

The other good thing about this tiny book is that you could either sit down and read it cover-to-cover, or just pick it up once in awhile and pick a random chapter to read. Either way, the mini-chapters are sure to quickly leave most readers wondering why they make such a big deal out of the things they do. Other short self-help books I like include "Finding Happiness in a Frustrating World".

This book is mostly fluffy stuff, but somewhat fun to read. Anyway, the hardcover edition is much cheaper in store than the Nook edition.

This book is very inspiring for me and it made me realize the small stuff that I get upset about is not worth all that wasted energy. I used this book when I start to get irk about the small stuff to not get to me.

The material in this book provides sound advice and perspective to help manage stress, anxiety, and anger. What I especially enjoy (on my nook) is you can quickly access the table of contents, pick a chapter heading with a title that catches your eye, and instantly get the bit of inspiration one needs from a snapshot reading. Back to your day, with a new set of eyes and the refreshing shot of literary expresso needed to focus your mind and heart.

Here's a book that I wanted to read long before I actually picked it up to do so. I used to think it was all part of the hoopla surrounding Oprah Nation, which Dr. Phil-ified all our thinking about life, relationships, etc. However, as these pages started to fill my life, a little at a time (confession - it's a bathroom book for me), it's wisdom started to seep in, and I started to yearn for more. Of the 100 idioms for dealing with modern life, some are quaint ("Turn your Melodrama into a Mellow-Drama"), some are insightful ("Search for the Grain of Truth in Other Opinions"), and some are quite moving ("Transform your Relationship to Your Problems"). There is an undercurrent of Zen philosophy throughout - I found parallels here with the recent book "The Power of Now", by Eckhart Tolle. The individual topics are easy to digest, never more than 2 pages each. I found that they mean a lot more to me the second (or third) time I read them. There are so many phrases here that have evolved into cultural icon status, it took a second reading to move beyond those. Richard Carlson weaves a common thread through many of the readings, and I think the whole is greater than the sum of the parts (cliche-alert). Wisdom can be an elusive target, especially with the "busyness" that modern life forces upon us, but this book has helped me find some, and discover ways to put it into practice. This is an enjoyable read; take what you can from the writings, skip the parts that don't resonate, and focus on the profound nuggets that you will inevitably find. Good Luck!

I have a thing for reading the occasional self-help book, and of course everyone's heard of these, but it wasn't until the copy was a remaindered $3 hardback edition at Borders that I even glanced at it. I'm glad I did -- while the entire book isn't as good as the first dozen chapters, the first dozen chapters felt like they were talking right to me. There are some things in the book I'm definitely going to carry with me, and that have already helped me with my anxiety. I'm quite pleased with it.

It¿s referring to the way that things `of the moment¿ gain an unwarranted importance which consumes our time, leaving us with scarcely the time to ask ourselves what is important, much less the time to pursue it.The book is structured as 100 chapters, each of only one or two pages and each dealing with a simple strategy to retrieve our lives from the reactive state that we too easily find ourselves in.The message of the book is don¿t waste time on the small stuff and of course, however important we may believe our lives are, if we stand back far enough, everything becomes small stuff. Several of the chapters are used to help the reader recognise this perspective. The approach to this illustrates the simplicity of the ideas presented. For example in the midst of an argument to become aware of your breathing and count to ten. To ask yourself whether the issue you are fighting for will be important to you in a year¿s time. To reflect that with the passage of a period as brief as 100 years, none of us will still be around. Other chapters offer approaches that can help you change your approach and for example become more patient, considerate, thankful, and help you gain control of your perspective on life.The ideas are simple, but this is their strength. They reflect what we already know. Richard doesn¿t set out to teach ideas, rather to gently remind us and encourage us to create a little space to adopt them in our all too reactive lives.

Not rocket science advice but a timely reminder of some small practical tips that get the blood pressure down and put things in perspective. One of my favourites is one someone is driving you up the wall with a whole range of negative behaviour, take time out to consider what this is teaching you. Used this with a Boss who is a sexist, megalomaniac bully(sadly not an exaggeration!) to make sure that I examined any bit of my behaviour that could fall into the same way of behaviouring.
