Newcomer Jess Klein hails from Boston by way of Rochester, NY, but Draw Them Near, her mainstream debut after one sparsely distributed independent album, was recorded in Nashville and has a distinctly Southern vibe. While the opening track, "Little White Dove, suggests that the album will be a homey country affair, the young singer-songwriter isn't quite so easy to pin down stylistically. Fronting a stellar studio band that includes ace guitarist Will Kimbrough, Wilco drummer Ken Coomer, and bassist Brad Jones, Klein is equally at home in singer-songwriter balladry, heartland roots rock, and soulful blues. Her voice has a fetching catch in its mid-range that sometimes recalls Lucinda Williams, as well as a prettier edge reminiscent of Rosanne Cash and Emmylou Harris. Comparisons aside, Draw Them Near presents a distinctive, self-assured talent whose sharp, literate songwriting encompasses the melancholy of the wistful "I'll Be Alright," the tenderness of the hymn-like "Song for an Angel" and the anger of the stinging "Goodbye, Goodbye." In the album's centerpiece "I Tried," the narrator defends her self-sacrifice against the recriminations of a jailed lover with "even though I failed in your eyes/ I tried"; Klein strikes a perfect balance between guilt and defiance, leading to a convincing declaration of independence, amplified in the next song, the bluesy and sexy "I Sure Would." Draw Them Near heralds the arrival of a remarkable new voice.
