While The Beginning of Survival compiles Joni Mitchell’s politically charged work from late in her career, Dreamland’s canvas is wider, encompassing all phases of Mitchell’s diverse canon. The 77-minute compilation, selected by the artist herself, overlaps slightly with 1996’s Hits collection, but it offers a better representation of the complexity and variety of the peerless singer-songwriter. The early signature tunes are here, of course: “Carey,” “Big Yellow Taxi,” and “Help Me” in their original versions; “For the Roses” and “Both Sides Now” in their recent orchestral re-creations. But Dreamland also makes room for more adventurous choices, such as the rhythmic “The Jungle Line,” the stark “Furry Sings the Blues,” and the pulsing “Nothing Can Be Done.” Only one of the 17 tracks hasn’t aged well: The poppy “Dancin’ Clown” suffers from the slick and busy production typical of the late ‘80s. But that’s a quibble -- throughout her career, Mitchell’s uncompromising vision, whether as a lyricist or a composer/arranger, allowed her songs to stand outside the mainstream even while she was influencing it, and Dreamland is an excellent single-disk overview of a massive, and massively important, body of work.

Excellent, Joni has such a clear pure voice..... I had forgotten how rich Joni's voice is. This CD is Pure Pleasure!

Some of the best music ever made during the past 50 years, these songs will live on for generations. Outstanding tracks throughout. I really doubt Joni is ever going to get rich off these wonderful compilations she's recently released, but maybe some young kids looking for something different just might stumble on to one of these and open up their minds about music. This is timeless stuff!

A really thorough collection spanning Joni Mitchell's amazing and diverse body of work would require at least three CDs. But, for the uninitiated or the seasoned fan wanting a quicker overview, Dreamland hits the target. Not all of the hits or classics are here (Woodstock, Chelsea Morning, Raised on Robbery and A Case of You aren't included), but there are some gems that provide a glimpse of the scope of Mitchell's musical adventure (Dreamland, The Jungle Line, and, from the magnificent album "Hejira," Furry Sings the Blues). Also included are four late-career reinterpretations featuring the London Symphony Orchestra. Three of these four succeed, particularly the stunning Both Sides Now and Amelia. Mitchell fans will no doubt debate some of the song choices, but with a large and diverse catalog to choose from, this is inevitable (and, by the way, all of these songs were NOT included on the earlier compilations "Hits" and "Misses.")

Who can give the most influencial woman in popular music any more than 5 stars. Only Dylan himself can touch Joni lyrically. Most of these are her more popular assessible songs but even then they will stretch you.

I am a big fan of Joni Mitchell, and I know that if you own Hits at the very least, then you don't need to buy this CD at all! The previous Geffen compilation, The Beginning of Survival (title?), is a rather important one because the songs deal with the world we live in now. Sadly, this "new" CD places the songs in a bad order, and on the other hand, all of these tracks are on Hits and Misses. This CD is just Unthrown Darts!
