Based on a novel by Iris Rainer Dart, Beaches traces the 30-year oil-and-water friendship between free-spirited Bronx Jew CC Bloom (Bette Midler) and uptight San Francisco WASP Hillary Essex (Barbara Hershey). The two meet as children in Atlantic City (played by Mayim Bialik and Marcie Leeds) and are reunited in the 1960s, when CC is a struggling singer and Hillary is trying to break free from her staid upbringing by becoming an activist. The two ladies room together, then fall out when both are attracted to off-Broadway producer John Pierce (John Heard). CC wins John, but she quickly outgrows him as she matriculates into a bawdy performer. The recently patched-up friendship between CC and Hillary is torn asunder again when Hillary and her new husband express distaste for CC's performing style. Comes the 1970s, and CC and Hillary are reunited after shedding their respective spouses. Broke again, they once more become Manhattan roommates. Their bond strengthens, but there is tragedy in store for the duo.

Beaches is a moving film about two friends. The first time I saw this movie I cried. This film is inspirational and if you have not seen it I highy recoomend you see it. You are missing out on a great movie if you don't take time to sit down to watch it.

Barbara Hershey does the best acting job in this tearjerker of friends and torn-apart relationships. The melodramatic actorship/acting of Bette Midler is a wonderful contrast to Barbara Hershey's character as a laid-back Tidewater aristocratic British reserve whereas Bette Midler gives strength to Hershey and the best qualities of each became imbued on each other.

This movie is by far my most favorite movie of all time. I love the way that it shows friendship through the tough times and the good. Which is what true friendship is about. Bette Midler's music is a plus side too. She has an incredible voice. Watch this one with your best friend or someone you love.

But very amazing and true. i watched it and was so stunned i wasnt the same for a few days. at the end is was really got me crying. how amazing was their friendship, that it lasted for that long, after all they went through. you get to know the characters, so what happens to them affects you. what happens to barbara hershey just killed me. no pun intended. amazing movie. amazing cast. i love it. so so much

If you have not seen beaches, you do not know what you are missing. It is one of the saddest films I have watched, I have watched this film so many times it still makes me have a lump in my throat and sometimes depending on the mood that I am in it make me cry, well you should watch it its the best and thetas straight from the horse mouth. Acting from Both Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey was just the best. The description on the back of the Box of the VHS: They met on a beach when they were young, brassy C.C Bloom (Bette Midler) and classy Hillary Whitney (Barbara Hershey). Though good times and bad times, through broken marriages and budding careers, they still had each other. And together they would face their greatest only best friends could. Hershey is splendid, and Midler will astound you al over again with her comedic and musical talents in this critically acclaimed box office smash. Beaches glows with warmth, humor and tenderness...This is one friendship you'll enjoy every minute of. I could not have put it better myself.
