Based on the compelling Leon Uris novel of the same name, Exodus is a fairly faithful adaptation of the birth of the new Jewish nation after the war. It's a shame that MGM didn't spend a little more time on this Paul Newman classic. It includes the original theatrical trailer, is released in widescreen only, and English surround sound and English, French and Spanish subtitles.

Exodus... A wonderful tale of the Jewish quest to find a home to call their own. It is a story of friendship and courage, of bravery and foolishness that shall claim the hearts of all who view it. It sticks to true facts that actually happened during the time period it is placed in, and has earned its place in a hall of glory, to my eyes. A truly magnificent work.

I am 57 years old and an avid old movie watcher...I really enjoyed this film and I can't believe that I've never heard of this film before. As a very small but vital part of jewish history it really brought their struggles to life. Especially since this was produced before the 1967 war. Given today, that 66 years after this portrayal of 1948 history, they are still in mortal conflict over the lands, fighting and losing their lives. Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint played great dramatic roles and I would recommend this film to everyone.

"Exodus" was a big movie in 1960. Directed by ingenious showman Otto Preminger, who never failed to drum up interest in whatever project he was associated with (along with the inevitable controversy and those striking Saul Bass titles and poster designs), the movie had all the trappings of a typical roadshow attraction: a huge production presented in glorious 70 mm telling a story of great historical and topical interest featuring an impressive roster of A-List actors. The movie was laden with prestige values and had "greatness" written all over it though in fact it was a ponderous production that boasted some stunning action sequences and a standout performance by Sal Mineo. It even managed to garner a few Oscar nods and deservedly won for Ernest Gold's now classic music score. However, anything worth remembering about the movie is lost in the terrible MGM DVD transfer that renders the Oscar nominated cinematography as virtually unwatchable. The image is overly soft, even blurry and I found the film impossible to sit through after about 15 minutes. "Exodus" deserves far better treatment than this. MGM Video needs to correct this problem and offer viewers a decent transfer.
