This reissue, a "Special Collector's Edition," of The Hunt for Red October is a vast improvement, in every way, over the initial release. For starters, the widescreen image (framed at 2.35:1) is anamorphic this time, and the transfer has never looked better. Granted, some grain is evident, especially early in the film, but it's never intrusive. The distinct color patterns are far more clear and the detail more exact. Equally, the blacks are very strong and solid. Also an upgrade is the sound. The earlier disc had a 5.1 Dolby Digital track, but this one includes that and a new DTS track. While the Dolby Digital track is good, the DTS version is noticeably stronger. Basses are deep, and surround effects are utilized in just the correct moment. As for supplements, while this disc is far from supplement heavy, it offers far more than the original disc. Along with the theatrical trailer, also on the first DVD, there is a fine half-hour documentary, covering many elements, from the story to the visual effects. As good as it is, it really begs for more. Also included is a commentary track from director John McTiernan. Despite significant gaps, he does offer some interesting insight into the production, but simply doesn't cover enough ground. Maybe not a perfect disc, this one is such a step up from what was offered initially that it's difficult to find anything to complain about.

Hunt for Red October captures all the great elements and movements of the original Clancy novel. Though the movie goes through a somewhat hurried character and plot introduction, the overall storyline is well developed. The basic hide & seek game of submarine warfare is portrayed through the race between the US & Russian navies in locating the renegade Russian sub Cmdr, Capt. Marco Ramius.

Supurb casting, excelent pace, very realistic, Should be great with suround-sound. In view of the recent Russian sub disaster - worth seeing again

The movie had an interesting plot and was well done. I haven't read the book but I bet it's even better.

The Hunt for Red October is one of the best movies of all time. I was really happy because the movie basically followed the book. I recommend for anyone interested in a great movie with lots of action and suspence. An all around AWESOME movie!!!

There is nothing like the character interplay in this movie. All of the sceens are supurbly played and the general plot line stays very close to the book.

The Hunt For Red October is a classic. The performances are superb. Sean Connery gave an outstanding performance. The film is worth seeing over and over. And then there was quite a few goodlooking men in the show as well. Especially many of the Red October and Konovalov crew. Anyways the movie is too good to pass up.

I saw this maybe two or three times in the theatres, and numerous times after that once I got my own copy on VHS. The DVD is even better with its behind-the-scenes featurette, not to mention the sound quality. Sean Connery can play Captain Kangaroo as far as I'm concerned, and he would STILL make it look WICKED COOL. I thought Alec Baldwin (before he became an SNL frequent-flyer) did a credible job as Jack Ryan, and I loved James Earl Jones as Greer. Caution: you may find yourself rooting for Sam Neill's character, and Fred Dalton Thompson has a classic line (SEE THE MOVIE and look for the scene after Ryan comes aboard the carrier Enterprise).

This my favorite film of all time. The character development made me think I know these men. Just enough edge to the film to make me wonder what happens. Action is also a 10 in this movie. Definitely a 5 star + movie.

I think this movie is one of the best Thriller Ever, Its really cool what Cpt. Ramius do...

Great storyline, lots of action, and EXPLOSIONS, EXPLOSIONS, EXPLOSIONS!!!! Sean Connery is great in the role of Ramius, but light stomached people beware. After maybe 15 minutes, someone dies and there is a sickening sound.

If Sean Connery was younger, he would have been a great Jack Ryan. But instead he is a classy, intellectual Russian submariner who wants to defect to of all places--America. Acting could have been better, but writing was supreme.
