Miracle Mile starts conventionally enough, with bashful musician Anthony Edwards going ga-ga over waitress Mare Winningham. After a pleasant if somewhat quirky day together, Edwards and Winningham plan a tete-a-tete at the all-night restaurant where the girl works. While preparing to call her on a pay phone, Edwards intercepts a frantic call from a soldier stationed at a Midwestern missile silo. The message: nuclear warheads have been launched, and it's only 70 minutes to Armageddon! This unsettling news casts severe doubts over the future of Edwards' and Winningham's relationship.

Flawed, but a gem nonetheless. How would you act and what would you do if you knew that your world was going to end in a little more than an hour? De Jarnatt turns a light romantic comedy into a statement on World War III. He accomplishes this in a most clever way. Once events begin to unravel, they do so in real time, with the digital clock at Johnnies Coffee House on Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles keeping track of the countdown. The hapless protagonists' actions, words, and encounters are like those of a cartoon world, with people doing things which are totally counter to their best interests. Many of the people themselves are like cartoon characatures. Harry, the main protagonist even ponders whether it could all be a dream? The intensity not quite flawlessly builds to an incredible climax. Yet, the whole is more than the sum of the parts. In spite of its flaws, I have rated it all five stars because it is that memorable of a film. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a widescreen copy of this. The DVD is presented in 4:3 full screen format. The sound track, composed and performed by Tangerine Dream, does an excellent job of keeping ones heart thumping as the tension builds to the film's climax.
