The 1961-62 season of the hugely popular CBS legal drama Perry Mason brought Erle Stanley Gardner's iconic and brilliant defense attorney (Raymond Burr) back to television for a fifth year, and witnessed him going head-to-head, yet again, with charismatic prosecutor Hamilton Burger (William Talman) and police officer Lieutenant Tragg (Ray Collins). This particular season featured such baffling cases as "The Case of the Missing Melody, "The Case of the Pathetic Patient, and "The Case of the Injured Innocent." This set features the first 15 episodes from season five, which aired between September 2, 1961, and December 30, 1961.

And he always will be. Perry Mason is who every lawyer (especially defense lawyers) SHOULD be, but so few even come anywhere near. Perry's fame is spreading by this point in the series. He's working in other cities as often as not. D. A. Burger and police Lieutenant Tragg are making fewer appearances, in large part because both actors (William talman as Burger and Ray Collins as Tragg) were getting old and tired and sick. Especially Collins; he would die before the series ended. (I don't know whether Lt. Tragg was killed off or if he just faded out.) There's a new main cop, Lt. Anderson (played by Wesley Lau). Also, Perry has a protege of sorts, law student David Gideon (Karl Held). He was one of Perry's clients in Season 4, and now he's working for Perry and going to law school. (The kid's going to be really knowledgeable and experienced by the time he graduates.) The cases are interesting and challenging as always (I still can't figure out most of them). The stories are all original now, not from the books (by Erle Stanley Gardner; look for them at a used book store). Buy all the Perry Mason series as they come out. You will never be disappointed, and they'll be good to watch for years and generations to come. Most of the people who saw Perry Mason on CBS first-run are grandparents now. Show them to your grandkids; it's the most intellectual fun they'll likely ever have.
