This fascinating DVD collects seven silent-film adaptations of Shakespearean plays. The films on this collection include King John (1899), The Tempest (1908), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1909), King Lear (1910), Twelfth Night (1910), The Merchant of Venice (1910), and Richard III (1911). These films were produced in Britain, the United States, and Italy. The disc contains a standard full-frame transfer (as any film produced before 1955 should). The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. There are neither subtitles nor closed-captions on this release. Although there are no bonus features, having these classic examples of early film on DVD is a treat. This disc is close to required viewing for any aficionado of silent film.
