In 1997 Superman received the animation sucess that Batman had undergone in the years preceeding it. In the Batman world, many fans felt the animated series saved the franchise. Clearly not as dark, Superman received a fantastic series as well and season 1 is a great place to start. A reintroduction to many famous villians you might know, or thought you knew in very finely crafted story lines. The ever prescent Lex Luthor-Corporate raider, which we first got a taste of in Ruby Spears 1988 animated adventures, is even more a thorn in the side of the Man of Steel than the old purple space suited Lex. All in all this is a great box set, just like Batman the Animated series and eventually the Justice League. Here lays great stories and a nice animated look for Superman. I wish these were still being produced.
After making the flawless Batman: The Animated Series, Bruce Timm and Company set their sights on the Man of Steel in this series. The results speak very well for the difficult to write character (How do you threaten Superman?) and are my favorite version of the classic icon yet. Not as engaging as Batman or Justice League, this series is nonetheless well scripted, exceptionally well cast, and fast paced. Of particular interest is the amount of time devoted to Krypton and its inhabitants. Bottom line, you will enjoy these fine shows.
