Directing his first film since 1998's Lethal Weapon 4, Richard Donner helmed this big-budget adaptation of Michael Crichton's novel of the same name. Featuring a script by first-time screenwriter George Nolfi, Timeline begins in France in the near future. A group of students from Yale are there studying a medieval site, when their professor, played by Billy Connolly, mysteriously goes missing. To make matters more enigmatic, the students are then taken back to the United States by a shadowy technology company called ITC, led by Robert Doniger (David Thewlis). The eccentric Doniger explains that because of a machine that his company built, their professor is trapped in 14th century France. In order to rescue him, two of the students, Chris Hughes (Paul Walker) and Kate Erickson (Frances O'Connor), along with Andre Marek (Gerard Butler), an archeological site manager, must travel to France, circa 1357, amid archaic war, deadly diseases, and other unexpected pitfalls. Meanwhile, David Stern (Ethan Embry), a third student, stays behind to keep an eye on the shady Doniger.

I liked this movie because the characters are very believable. You fall in love with Gerard Butler's character Marek in about 5 mininutes. It's not the greatest movie of all time but it revolves around a really good story and strong characters.

This movie kind of sucked. The plot was weak the acting poor, the special effects bad. It looked like it was gonna be really good. But then it wasn't.

Not just another time travel plot, Timeline has enough mystery to keep you guessing from the opening to the final credits. With the exception of a few minutes in the mysterious lab, Timeline, moves at a fast pace, with wonderful edge of your seat plot twists throughout. One of the best period movies in some time, 14th century Europe is brought back to life, with extremely authentic costumes and scenes. A movie 'sleeper', if you missed it in theaters, do yourself a favor and rent or buy it. It is worth watching again and again.

I had read the book and was happy to see that the movie followed the book closely. I really enjoyed it.

As a HUGE fan of the novel, I looked forward to this film like a kid waiting for Christmas. But all I got was a lump of coal! The story got sliced to bits by the screenwriters, killing the fascinating scientific back-story. Also aggravating was the contrived familial relationship thrown in I guess to make us care more about the professor. A truly disappointing omission is the wonderful mystery that the heroes had to solve in order to find the Green Chapel, fight the Green Knight and discover the secret tunnel into the castle. Don't worry if you haven't seen the movie and think I just dropped a spoiler on you...the entire episode never made it into the film...along with most of what made this story worth committing to film.

A wonderful movie for many reasons. One is the contrast of the medieval world with the modern one. We have an exact date in the middle ages.....1357. The huge difference when, at the end, the characters return to the present -- only a few hunded years later! The acting was great. Gerard Butler was perfect. Anna Friel was a delight as a woman caught in the events of those times. She felt like she didn't belong in the modern world. The cinematographer is Caleb Deschanel -- the man responsible for the beauty in such films as "National Treasure," "The Natural, " The Right Stuff," and "The Black Stallion." As is often the case with Richard Donner movies, it is often under-rated.

Wow! This is such a great movie! I don't know what the critics were taling about, but I loved it! A great movie, as well as a great book!

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It was action-packed; there was always something important happening and it never slowed down. Ok, so the technology in the movie is pretty unrealistic right now, but once you got over that the movie was a lot of fun. The characters were pretty lovable too. I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes science fiction/fantasy or war movies.

Had it not been for Gerard Butler,David Thewlis and the fantastic Billy Connolly this movie would have been, quite possibly, the worst movie ever made. One question. Who on EARTH thought Paul Walker could act? Another question. Why not let Frances O'Connor keep her English accent? Was it so crucial that she be American? Yikes.

This is such a fun movie. I loved the book and was keeping my fingers crossed that the movie would live up to it and luckily, in the tradition of Michael Crichton books (Jurassic Park 1, 2, and 3, and Sphere) this was an excellent movie that retained all my favorite elements from the book, but added new things too. The casting was excellent, although when I read Timeline I never pictured Marek as quite as gorgous as Gerard Butler, he really gave Paul Walker a run for his money! The dual romance was fun, although I thought the girl who played Lady Claire was not as beautiful as she should have been and her accent was really cheesy and obviously fake. Other than that it was a fun and completely entertaining movie that I would highly recommend. Fans of timetravel, Michael Crichton, archaeology, history and Gerard Butler will enjoy this movie.

I love this movie. It moved a little too fast in certain parts, but I love needing to watch it a second time to beable to catch everything. It really keeps you thinking. It's the best.
