Once I figured out you had to tap the picture for it to enlarge, we enjoyed the story tremendously. The only complaint was that it wasn't intuitive that we needed to tap the picture, and that it was a little slow and clunky to open each page. That had nothing to do with the story, however. The other reviews that were negative probably experienced the same as us but didn't resolve the issue by tapping the pictures. Good, cute book.

Elphie is going on an epic adventure with his dad to the shops get some milk, so that his dad can make him an extra special chocolate milk. Donning his adventuring outfit, cape and sword, Elphie and his dad set off. Whilst on his adventure, he fights a tiger, slays a dragon and saves a princess. But when dad is not looking, Elphie ends up in a dangerous situation. Will Elphie manage to get his ‘extra special chocolate milk’? Elphie is just like any young child (although he’s an elephant), he doesn’t like going to the shops. His dad comes up with a clever way to get him to go, telling him that they are going to have an epic adventure on the way. Elphie is enjoying his adventure, until his dad takes a phone call. Elphie then becomes bored, and this is when he ends up making a dangerous mistake. The book, to me, had numerous underlying messages. I felt it was not only about teaching children how to have fun and how easy it is to end up in dangerous situations, it was also aimed at adults, teaching us that even the smallest lack of concentration when you’re out with little ones can be dangerous. I also felt that the author was making reference to all those parents that spend too much time on their mobile phones when out with their children. The book is beautifully illustrated, and with between one to a few lines of text on each page, kids will find it easy to read and engage with the story. A lovely book which I’m sure lots of young children will adore. Reviewed by Stacey at Whispering Stories Book Blog

Colorful and imaginative ‘Elphie and Dad go on an Epic Adventure‘, written by Hagit R. Oron and nice illustrated by Or Oron is well-made, educating children book that through its colorful pages shows an easy-to-understand story about relationship between father and son. Inside the covers the simple story of turning an ordinary chore into something exciting is presented. On the other hand, father was the one who came up with the idea of epic adventure therefore he was very cautious, while Elphie became bored because she was not allowed much space. The lesson authors provided is that kids need to have some space from their parents. What is also particularly noteworthy about this book is its artwork – the nicely made digital illustrations that on whole spreads picture particular scenes from the story. The illustrations are full of bright and warm colors, while the level of detail would allow with each new reading to spot some new previously unnoticed detail. Overall, ‘Elphie and Dad go on an Epic Adventure‘ can be recommended both as touching and educating title for children who are going to enjoy this colorfully made and imaginative book. Therefore I hope this is not the last book I will read from these talented authors. I was given a copy of this book by the author for the purpose of unbiased review, while all the presented information is based on my impressions.

Reviewed by Rosie Malezer for Readers' Favorite Elphie and Dad Go On an Epic Adventure by Hagit R. Oron and Or Oron details the story of Elphie the Elephant and his father, who offers to make Elphie an extra special chocolate milk, only to discover that there is no milk in the fridge. Initially, Elphie doesn’t want to go to the store with his father because it is such a boring thing to do, until Elphie’s father points out that anything can become an adventure, if only you use your imagination. Elphie tucks away his sword, dons his cape, and is ready to have an epic adventure with his father. On the way to the store, Elphie slays clouds shaped like monsters, chases a lizard which is trying to catch flies, and then climbs a wall. With each adventure, Elphie's father warns him to be careful or he will hurt himself. When the cell phone rings and engages his dad, Elphie becomes bored and wishes he'd never gone to the store. He then spots a friend across the road and runs out to greet him, running right into the path of an oncoming car... What will happen to Elphie? Both the graphics and the story were wonderfully done. Hagit R. Oron and Or Oron have written a book which not only details the principle of “look before you leap,” but also shows how imaginative children can be. Elphie’s facial expressions emoted perfectly what he was thinking and feeling during the entire journey, whether it was boredom, excitement, or fear. Elphie and Dad Go On an Epic Adventure would be a wonderful book to read at bedtime for smaller children, teaching them about road danger, adventure, and using your imagination to have fun.

A bright picture book that brings the inner life of a child together with a parent’s concern for safety and fun, Elphie and Dad go on an Epic Adventure is a very satisfying tale to share with any small child. Particularly pleasing touches include the active presence of a loving father, uncluttered (yet detailed) images that convey imagination, reality and emotion in an amazingly simple manner, and a story that’s told in first person, from the child’s point of view. Italicized dialog is pleasingly natural, and real-world situations are offered without weighty explanation, leaving room for child and parent to figure things out. The illustrations are the icing on the cake in this book, portraying a vividly real world (modern Israel I’m told), with details that tease the imagination, and hints of what might happen in pages to come. It's all put together in a manner that makes the book a delight to read and reread over and again. Disclosure: I was given a free ecopy and I offer my honest review.
