Purpose: This book is designed to assist medical students in reviewing, in just one to two days, all embryology studied in the first year of medical school. Although weak in its coverage of the first three weeks of development, the book does succeed in emphasizing the clinical aspects of embryology, a topic stressed by the revamped National Board Exam.
Audience: Although the authors, all professors of anatomy, have directed this work toward medical students, this book would certainly prove useful for undergraduate studies.
Features: The questions are pertinent and discussed in significant detail. Unfortunately, with embryology based on the three-dimensional migration and metamorphosis of anatomical primordia , the text appears to be underillustrated. The questions are original and thus are not referenced. All artwork is referenced.
Assessment: Although an extensive collection of questions, this review is underillustrated and does not adequately stress the early weeks of development. In addition, several obvious mistakes were found in the text (e.g., question 416: nephrons are erroneously termed neurons). Nevertheless, if students were to answer all 569 questions and read the affiliated tutorials, they would undoubtedly do well on the embryology portion of the USMLE exam. Therefore, the text should be recommended.
