Calí-born vocalist Marta Gomez has brought her delightful pan-American sensibility to New York, displayed on finely wrought albums like this one. She is in every way a continuation of the Latin American tradition of nueva canción, an internationalist conspiracy of socialists and hippy-dippy types that have created the canon of Latin American song. Against greats such as Caetano Veloso, Mercedes Sosa, Silvio Rodriguez, and Violeta Parra, Gomez brings a literate, light voice that owes more than a little to the understated master vocalists of Brazil. Even her readings of Mexican standards such as "Cielito Lindo" are cool to the touch, delivered with a smile. Gomez's smart ensemble -- guitarist Julio Santillán, percussionist Franco Pinna, bassist Fernando Huergo, and flutist Yulia Musayelyan, who collectively perform as Los Changos -- is joined on this typically lustrous one-take Chesky production by occasional accordion and clarinet. Plying less obvious Latin rhythms from Peru, Uruguay, and Colombia, they bring a radiant warmth to Entre Cada Palabra, whose live recording only underscores the beautifully pure music making happening here. A gorgeous effort.
