A spooky, funny middle grade adventure with a sassy, memorable heroine and a charming Southern feel, perfect for fans of Kate DiCamillo, Kate Messner, and Natalie Lloyd.
Twelve-year-old haunt huntress apprentice Evangeline Clement spends her days and nights studying the ways of folk magic, honing her monster-hunting skills while pursuing local bayou banshees and Johnny revenants.
With her animal familiar sure to make itself known any day now, the only thing left to do is prove to the council she has heart. Then she will finally be declared a true haunt huntress, worthy of following in the footsteps of her long line of female ancestors.
But when Evangeline and her grandmother are called to New Orleans to resolve an unusual case, she uncovers a secret that will shake her to the soles of her silver-tipped alligator-skin boots.
Set in the evocative Louisiana bayou and the vibrant streets of New Orleans, Evangeline’s is a tale of loyalty and determination, the powerful bonds of friendship and family, and the courage to trust your gut no matter how terrifying that might be.

"Evangeline of the Bayou" is a really fun, supernatural middle grade novel. Evangeline is 12 years old and training to be a haunt huntress, a woman who can help hunt down supernatural creatures. With lush descriptions, adventure/action, and a courageous young heroine, this book is simply lovely. Evangeline and her grandmother are a force to be reckoned with, and in the setting of the bayou, this has a wonderful supernatural feel in a mystical setting. Evangeline is perfect- such a fun character with so much bravery but also the questioning of pre-adolescence. Evangeline is not sure if she is a haunt huntress or a middling (someone who doesn't have powers). If she is a haunt huntress, she should meet her familiar soon. However, the powers do not always pass down, and so, there is a chance that Evangeline could be without them. You will absolutely cheer for Evangeline as she finds her way amongst the haunt huntresses and middlings. This book is a wonderful middle grade novel that is sure to be a hit with many young audiences, and I highly recommend for young readers. Evangeline and her story are bursting at the seams with courage, heart, and some supernatural dangers. Please note that I received this book through a goodreads giveaway. All opinions are my own.
A Haunt Huntress battles all sort of ghosts and monsters using her wits, potions, the tools of the trade and a bit of magic. Evangeline Clement’s thirteenth birthday is fast approaching. That’s when a Haunt huntress or Swamp Witch finds her animal familiar and proves she has heart in order to awaken her magical powers. Evangeline is getting a bit worried though because time is running out and she has yet to acquire her familiar. This middle grade novel has so much to offer a young reader. A brave heroine with a big heart, she has to learn to trust her gut and believe in herself while battling a sinister foe. A gripping plot that will have tweens totally engrossed. Evangeline’s wise Gran’s adages were wonderful. I especially liked this one, “Fear is a steel trap. It keeps you from moving forward. It binds up your courage, as well as your smarts.” The illustrations throughout the story are bold and striking. There is also a Glossary at the end of the book of monsters and other otherworldly critters for those readers wanting to know more about shadow crouchers or rougarous. A fun, fast paced spine-tingling read with a feisty heroine that will delight any tween.
