Overview

Having reinvented themselves again and again over the years -- paisley-clad indie-poppers, Iggy-inspired hard rockers, ecstasy-fueled dance-floor mavens, and all-around troublemakers -- Primal Scream never make it all that easy to chart their moves. But on this aptly titled, peripatetic disc, Bobby Gillespie and company have really outdone themselves. At the onset of "Deep Hit of Morning Sun," you might think the Primals have gone post-millennial gospel, so deep is the spiritual heart of the flanging, echo-laden track. But then the bad-trip sonics of "Miss Lucifer" -- a throbbing ode to all things hedonistic -- kicks in and dispels that notion (for a while, at least). Evil Heat is rife with such hairpin turns, tripping madly on the Air-styled euphoria of "Autobahn 66" and the sneering clangor of "Rise," an unblinking assessment of humanity's inherent unpleasantness that makes a nice counterpoint to the PIL song of the same name. While the much-discussed "Bomb the Pentagon" doesn't rear its head here, there's no shortage of contentiousness -- most palpably the space-blues foray "The Lord Is My Shotgun," replete with harmonica playing by Robert Plant. To balance things out, Kate Moss turns up as well, duetting with Gillespie on a suitably ethereal version of the Lee Hazlewood/Nancy Sinatra classic "Some Velvet Morning." Primal Scream's albums rarely make for a boring ride, and the red-hot Evil Heat is no exception.
