Settled into his new life, Lewis seems content living with his magical Uncle Jonathan and neighbor Mrs Zimmermann. He even has a new best friend, Rose Rita, who loves to play sports, build Roman ship models and play with magic—all the things Lewis loves to do too! After discovering Grandpa Barnavelt's 1859 lucky coin, Lewis is certain that it is magical, so he puts it to the test—he recites one of Mrs Zimmermann's spells to awaken its magic. Only Lewis hasn't awakened a good sort of magic. As he wears the coin around his neck, sinister things start to happen. Strange letters addressed to Lewis arrive at midnight, a dark shadowy figure begins to follow him in town and something seems to be inside his body controlling his actions. As the figure in the shadows appears more and more, Lewis is possessed by its power, unable to free himself. Has Lewis awakened a force beyond his control? And can Uncle Jonathan, Mrs. Zimmermann and Rose Rita make it in time to rescue Lewis?

I like this book because it's very interesting. I thought that the way that the author wrote this book is very intelligent. Before I read this book I couldn't read some of the hard words in it or the meanings to them but now I do and I owe it all to you! Thank you for such a great book.

My mother bought me the first three Lewis Barnavelt books when I was about 8 and I loved them dearly. Now, many, many years later I still thoroughly enjoy them.

The second in the Lewis Barnavelt series, this novel finds Lewis in possession of a mysterious old coin that has more powers than Lewis can ever imagine.

This is the first chapter book I ever read when I was a kid. I read it over and over and I STILL pick it up and read it every once in a while. It's a great mystery as are all of Bellairs' books. I recommend to kids and adults both.

This is the second book in the Lewis Barnavelt series by John Bellairs. I greatly enjoyed the first one and thought I'd give at least a few of the others a try. This one was not illustrated by Edward Gorey, so it has a slightly softer/cartoony feel to it. The plot was incredibly suspenseful and fairly creepy (mostly you find this out at the end), but not too scary for kids probably 6-8+.I definitely want to read more in this series.

This book is about a young kid named Louis that finds an amulet. This amulter raises a spirit of a ghost and the ghost haunts him. He is on the verge of death, will he be saved? Review by: rocky means Is was a little slow in the begginning and not that exiting but in the middle it got great and scary. I would rate it a five if the begginning was not boring. The ending was great and topped it all off.
