Grimm’s Fairy Tales is a collection of German fairy tales first published in 1812 by the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm. They were among the best-known storytellers of folk tales, and popularized stories such as The Frog Prince, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, Little Red Riding Hood, and Snow White. The influence of these fairy tales was widespread. W. H. Auden praised the collection as one of the founding works of Western culture.

The popularity of the Grimms’ folk tales has endured well. The tales are available in more than 100 languages and have been later adapted by Walt Disney, with films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Tangled.

This cloth-bound book includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket, and is limited to 100 copies.

About the Author

The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, were German academics, philologists, cultural researchers, lexicographers and authors who together collected and published folklore during the 19th century. They were among the first and best-known collectors of folk tales, and popularized traditional oral tale types such as Cinderella, The Frog Prince, The Goose-Girl, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White. Their classic collection Children's and Household Tales, was published in two volumes, in 1812 and in 1815.

The brothers were born in the town of Hanau in Hesse-Cassel (now Germany) and spent most of their childhood in the nearby town of Steinau. Their father's death in 1796 impoverished the family and affected the brothers for many years after. They attended the University of Marburg where they began a lifelong dedication to researching the early history of German language and literature, including German folktales. The rise of Romanticism during the 18th century had revived interest in traditional folk stories, which to the Grimms and their colleagues represented a pure form of national literature and culture. The Brothers Grimm established a methodology for collecting and recording folk stories that became the basis for folklore studies. Between the first edition of 1812-15, and the seventh and final edition of 1857, they revised their collection many times, so that it grew from 156 stories to more than 200. In addition to collecting and editing folk tales, the brothers compiled German legends. Individually, they published a large body of linguistic and literary scholarship. Together, in 1838 they began work on a massive historical German dictionary (Deutsches Wörterbuch), which, in their lifetimes, they completed only as far as the word Frucht, 'fruit'.

When I was looking at reviews to buy this book, people said it had the worst format and had many spelling errors. I decided to get the free sample and see if what they said was true. I found out that the book did not have any spelling errors that I could see, the only problem I had was that it doesn't flow as well as other books but come on! These stories are from how many years ago? This is a great read for people who like farie tales or want to know more of the Grimm tales than the ones everybody knows. If you don't believe me just get the sample!

I really like Grimm's because they're an interesting take on fairy tales. I like the Dover version because it's small and I can easily carry it to class. The only thing I have a problem with is the print, it's a little small. Other than that, I like it.

Really good fairy tales! The Brothers Grimm are good writers. It would be cool if some of the fairy tales were real life.

this was a great book to read as a class and do exercises and questions at the end of each story in the book. Doing those exercises with the book help you understand how to analize things.

The Brothers Grimm have a mastery of the written art and a plethora of their works are demonstrated in this extensive book full of their many stories. None of the stories are very long, which allows the reader to come and go as he pleases without worrying about forgetting key details. Although these stories are short, many maintain a sense of humor that is bordering cynical. With various stories that all have one common factor that the happy ending might not happen, these series of books will keep you on your toes as well ass amuse and entertain you.

There are no pictures; it's a no-frills book. The formatting is odd. The stories themselves are awesome. It's great for reading aloud. My 8 & 11 yr olds love to hear them.

So I have always liked Grimm Brothers fairy tales. I was not sure about this book, though, because I heard that there were a lot of miss spellings. I got the sample. AWESOME!! NO MISS SPELLINGS. Atleast not in the sample. I love the original stories that are quite interesting. Don't believe me? Get the sample and see for yourself! :):) P.S. Some of the stories are kind of boring so you have to find the right ones. If you think the 2 or 3 stories in the sample are boring it may be that it is just those stories are a little drab. But don't get me wrong, there are TONS of AWESOME stories written by Brothers Grimm. I am simply stating that wich ones will be interesting varies by likings and what each person finds most interesting. All I am saying is don't judge the book by its sample, it may be that those 3 stories just are not your taste.I have read the Brothers Grimm fairy tales other places and it would be totally worth buying, from what I have seen. Please take into Acount that I have not read the whole book on my device, simply the sample, but I have read it elsewhere and thoroghly enjoyed it. As for the book, I did not see any spelling errors in the sample. I hope I did not bore you with my long review. I would like only for this to help you decide on getting the book or not, thanks for reading this!! :):)
