This young adult fantasy is the tale of a young orphan boy that learns he is a young wizard and eligible to leave his abusive uncle's home to go to wizard school. The story is a series of adventures during his first year of school, culminating in defeating a sorcerer who is trying to revive the evil Lord Voldemort. At the school, Harry makes friends with Ron and Hermione, fellow students, and several wizard teachers. This book is charming in its simple writing style and depth of characters. The reader will find himself caring about Harry and his friends. Thankfully, this book is the first of a seven book series, so there are many more adventures to share with these young wizards. The book has faced controversy because of the "occult" references of spells, amulets, wands, and demons. A teacher would need to use caution when presenting this book to students, but if approved, the teacher can use this book to discuss such broad messages as friendship, loyalty, perseverance, and resistance to temptation. Interestingly, the author has used Latin words for the root words in her "incantations" which could lead to a discussion of this language in a classroom setting during the reading of this book.
