On this recording, guitar adventurer Frisell covers Aaron Copland, Madonna, Charles Ives, Sonny Rollins, Muddy Waters, John Hiatt, and John Phillip Sousa and somehow makes it seem like the most natural thing in the world to do. In his hands, genres collapse -- here, everything comes out sounding like American music, glistening with plainspoken melodicism and gutsy vigor. Relying on a less-is-more approach, Frisell gets the maximum emotional punch from the minimum of guitar flash. By making each note count, Frisell invests his diverse material with equal intensity and feeling. Surrounding himself with fellow travelers in wide-eared eclecticism like clarinetist Don Byron, accordionist Guy Klucevsek, and drummer Joey Baron doesn't hurt one bit either. Roaming the musical globe has become one of the tenets of post-modernism, but few jazz artists have pulled it off as elegantly and unpretentiously as Frisell.
