In 1386 in the town of Hagenheim, in what is now Germany, seventeen-year-old Rose is thankful to have found work as the apprentice of the town healer. If she can prove her worth, she will someday be the town healer, which means she would not be forced into an unwanted marriage with one of the horrible suitors her mother keeps forcing on her. However she often feels sick at the sight of blood and worries she will not be able to be a good healer, and thus lose her position. Wilhelm, Lord Hamlin, is the duke's son and the future ruler of their region. He has been betrothed since childhood to a mysterious young noblewoman in hiding, whom he has never met. He must find and defeat the evil conjurer Moncore, so that his future wife may come out of hiding and they can marry. When Wilhelm is injured and the healer is away, Rose, as the apprentice, must care for his injuries. The two find themselves drawn to each other from the start, but a love between them would be forbidden. Wilhelm is a nobleman and already betrothed, and he has an obligation to his betrothed, his family, and his people. Rose knows she is far below his social class and must focus on becoming a good healer so that she can avoid marriage to the most recent, horrible suitor her mother has chosen for her, a disgusting merchant, rather than spending her days longing for a love that can never be. But despite that, neither Wilhelm or Rose can stop thinking about each other. The Healer's Apprentice is a very romantic fairy tale inspired love story with a charming Medieval setting. The love between Rose and Wilhelm was very sweet, and both were strong and likeable characters. They seemed so real as they struggled with their feelings for each other which conflicted with their responsibilities and obligations to others. I highly recommend this very sweet and romantic love story to both teen and adult readers who enjoy fairy tale retellings or sweet historical romances. Disclosure: Review copy provided by publisher.

Rose has begun her training as the healer's apprentice. She hopes to learn the job well so that someday she can be the healer of Hagenheim Castle and not have to marry any aging bachelors. But the mere sight of blood makes Rose swoon. Still, she is determined to make this life work for herself. One day, when the master healer is away, Lord Hamlin, heir to Hagenheim Castle, is brought in with a grievous wound. Rose is the only one who can help. As she struggles to do a good job, she cannot help but notice how handsome and kind Lord Hamlin is. But she is a mere peasant, and Lord Hamlin is betrothed to another. Rose must fight against her attraction and focus on becoming a healer. For that is her destiny, is it not? Melanie Dickerson writes a wonderful fairy tale romance. Her characters are noble and good, yet struggle with doing the right thing and sometimes fail. She paints a realistic medieval world from the beauty of Hagenheim Castle to the laws that governed society then. I was drawn in from page one and read the whole book in one day. If you love medieval stories, fairy tales, and romance, you must read this book. I'm so excited about Melanie Dickerson's writing. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next. Highly recommended.

I received an advanced copy of this book, and my fifteen-year-old daughter insisted that she read it first. She absloutely loved the story and annihilated it in under twenty-four hours. Her only complaint was that she didn't want it to end. I've only read a few chapters so far, but I'm loving it too. This is not just a book for kids. The fairy tale element is a great touch to this medieval romance. Congrats to this talented debut author.

I grabbed this book at the library, expecting to be impressed, as I usually am with Melanie's books. Instead, I was blown out of the ball park! This is now my favorite book, and I carry it with me wherever I go! It's a masterpiece involving two unsuspecting characters, and an ending that left me breathless and wondering when my Prince Charming will come.

I felt the author did such a good job telling this story that I didn't realize it was the retelling of a fairytale until I read the reviews after I read the book. The characters are developed nicely, making them seem like real people that once existed. To me, that's what makes historical stories interesting. I couldn't put this book down and read it in a day. Just wish her other books were e-reads, too.

I absolutely LOVED this book. It actually made me cry at some parts. When I do that, I consider a book really amazing. The bad guy was actually pretty obvious if you read the book carefully, but that doesn't take away any of my love for this book. I actually felt what the characters were feeling; my heart ached for them, I felt giddy when they were together, etc. I wish all books were like this one. I highly recommend it(:

Rose is a peasant girl, glad to be apprenticed to the local healer since that will keep her from being forced to marry the lecherous wool merchant who has been pursuing her. But she's not convince healing is really the way she wants to spend her life since she gets queasy around blood. Both handsome sons of the duke of Hagenheim are attracted to Rose when they return from Heidleberg University. One sees her physical beauty and his own desire for it; the other her mind and compassionate spirit. But the brother we readers are rooting for is promised to the daughter of a neighboring lord and the future of the region rests on the alliance. Dickerson brings to life a fairytale world of lords and castles, evil conjurers and a beauty of lowly status. Even the girl's name, Rose, seems to jump right out of the Brothers Grimm. The theme of duty and responsibility verses personal desire is woven throughout the story. I was reminded of Abraham maneuvering for a son in Ishmael as the lovers each struggle with wanting to manipulate the situation to gain what they want instead of trusting God to give them His best. Dickerson's spiritual values permeate this romantic retelling of the familiar tale of the Sleeping Beauty.
