Heat of the Night

Chapter One

The Twilight

Connor Bruce took out the nearest guard with a perfectly aimed blow dart.

It was a split-second assault, but the tranquilizer took a bit longer to work than that. The guard had time to yank the dart free and withdraw his glaive before his eyes rolled back into his head and he collapsed to the floor in a puddle of red garments.

"Sorry, chap," Connor muttered, as he bent over the fallen body and collected the guard's comm unit and sword. The man would awake with only the vague sensation of having dozed, perhaps in boredom.

Connor straightened and whistled a low warbling birdcall, telling Lieutenant Philip Wager that he'd succeeded in his task. The responding whistle told him the other Temple guards around the perimeter had also been neutralized. Within moments he was surrounded by a dozen of his men. They were dressed for battle in dark gray, form-fitting sleeveless tunics and matching loose pants. Connor wore similar garments, but his were black denoting his rank as Captain of the Elite Warriors.

"You're going to see things inside that will startle you," Connor warned, his blade whistling as he pulled it free of its scabbard on his back. "Focus on the mission. We have to figure out how the Elders brought Captain Cross back to the Twilight from the Dreamers' plane of existence."

"Yes, Captain."

Wager aimed a pulse emitter at the massive red torii gate that herald the entrance to the Temple complex, temporarily disturbing the vid unit that recorded those who visited. Connor stared at the archway with a roiling mixture of horror, confusion, and anger. The structure was so imposing it forced every Guardian to stare and read the warning engraved in the ancient language—"Beware of the Key that turns the Lock."

For centuries, he and every member of his team had hunted the Dreamer who was prophesied to come to their world through the dream state and destroy them. The Dreamer who would see them as they were and recognize that they were not a figment of a nocturnal imagination, but real beings who lived in the Twilight—the place where the human mind came in slumber.

But Connor had already met the infamous Key and she wasn't a specter of doom and annihilation. She was a slender-but-curvy blonde veterinarian with big dark eyes and a deep well of compassion.

Lies, all of it. All these years wasted. Luckily for the Key—also known innocuously as Lyssa Bates—Captain Aidan Cross, warrior of legend and Connor's best friend, had found her first. Found her, fell in love with her, and eloped with her to the mortal plane.

Now it was Connor's mission to unravel the mysteries of the Elders here in the Twilight, and everything he needed to know was safeguarded in the Temple of the Elders.

Let's go, he mouthed.

With the timing down to pinpoint accuracy, they rushed through the gate. They split into two teams running along either side of the stone-lined center courtyard, weaving in and out among fluted columns of alabaster stone.

The wind blew gently, carrying with it the fragrance of nearby flowers and fields of wild grass. It was the time of day when the Temple was closed to the general public and the Elders were secluded in meditation. The perfect time to break in and steal whatever information and secrets they could get their hands on.

Connor entered the haiden first. Holding up three fingers, he then waved to the right while he moved to the left. Three Elites obeyed the silent command and took the east side of the circular room.

The two teams moved within the shadows, highly aware that any misstep would allow the vid units around the perimeter to pick up their incursion. In the center of the vast space waited semicircular rows of benches that faced the columned entryway they had just come through. Rising several stories high, there were so many benches the Guardians had lost count of the number of Elders who ruled from them long ago. This was the heart of their world, the center of law and order. The seat of power.

Regrouping at the middle hallway that led to the honden, Connor paused, and the others awaited his command. The hall to the west branched off toward the Elders' living quarters. The hall to the right went to a secluded open-air meditation courtyard.

This center gallery was where it got freaky. After his first—and heretofore only—Temple break-in, he was prepared. His men weren't.

He looked at them with an arched brow, silently admonishing them to heed his earlier command. They nodded grimly, and Connor continued on.

As they walked, a vibration beneath their feet drew everyone's attention to the floor. The stone shimmered and became translucent, creating the impression that the ground had disintegrated and they were about to fall into an endless blanket of stars. He groped for the wall by instinct, his teeth gritted together, then the view of space melted into a swirling kaleidoscope of colors.

"Fuck me," Wager breathed.

Connor had said the exact same thing the first time he'd walked this corridor. Every step created ripples in the colors, suggesting that whatever it was responded to their presence.

"Is that real?" Corporal Trent whispered fiercely. "Or a hologram of some sort?"

Lifting his hand, Connor reminded the men to keep their silence. He had no idea what the damn thing was. He knew only that he couldn't look at it or vertigo would make him sick.

They moved past the private Elder library to reach the control room. There was one Elder there, a lone sentinel lost within a vast space dominated by high walls lined with bound volumes and a large console. As was the custom of the Elders, he'd been left behind when the others retired for the afternoon, which made him the unfortunate recipient of a tranq dart to the neck. Connor dragged his unconscious body aside to give Wager access to the crescent-shaped touchpad control panel.

Heat of the Night is the followup book to Pleasures of the Night, which - if you read my previous review - you know I loved. This book was just as good. There was a little bit more "world building" in this one than the last one, and I did find myself feeling a bit confused now and then - but I attribute that to the fact that I am of average intelligence while Syliva Day is an obvious genius LOL I also didn't let it worry me too much because I know Sylvia plans on continuing this series when she is able (she said it and I believe it!) and so any lingering questions will be answered at some point. And this series is so good, it will be well worth the wait I have no doubt. Connor Bruce has left the Twilight and come to our world to warn his friend Aidan (from Pleasures of the Night) about some serious scary stuff that is going to affect both worlds. When he arrives, the first person he meets is Stacey Daniels (whom we first met in Pleasures of the Night). She is smart and sexy and feisty and Connor wants her badly. On Stacey's part - she thinks Connor is probably the hottest guy she's ever seen, but she also has a bad track record with men, so isn't looking to start anything. But she simply can't resist Connor's almost overwhelming sexual pull - and the resulting frantic, fierce coming together is toe-curling! (for Stacey, and for the reader!) But the bad guys are coming, and before these two can have a chance at a relationship - they're going to have a lot of trials and hard times to get through. Heat of the Night is another fabulous installment to an awesome series. Its erotic, funny, intelligent, and romantic - among other things. The plotting is excellent, pacing perfect, and the characters are all unique and believable. Nothing cliche here, just a very sexy story written by a very talented lady.

I enjoyed reading the two books in this series but I am disappointed that the story is left hanging. I want to know what happens. Sylvia Day definitely needs to finish this series.

In the ongoing war between the Dream Guardians and the Nightmares on the twilight plane, Captain Connor Bruce leads his Elite Warriors who bring erotic pleasures to mortal females. However, he has recently found out an inconvenient truth about the Elders they apparently lied to him and others.----------------- He wants to know the truth, which means he must break into the Elders¿ Temple where he expects to uncover their secrets. However, Connor soon learns more than he bargained for and fears for his former peer friend, Aidan Cross, who left the Dream Guardians and Twilight time to live with Lyssa Bates the human he loves (see PLEASURES OF THE NIGHT). Connor manages to reach real world California, but struggles with everyday living. When he meets Lyssa¿s best friend, veterinary assistant and single mom Stacey Daniels, he is stunned as he begins to understand why Aidan crossed over. Whereas Stacey who was upset over her deadbeat ex boyfriend taking their child Justin skiing, which she cannot afford due to the lack of child support, she is even more shocked by her attraction to Connor, but though both fight it they cannot resist the lure of love.------------------------ This entertaining romantic fantasy stars two likable lead characters and a fully developed complex Day world (ironically Twilight time). The story line is fast-paced especially after the lead couple meets. Although it would help to read the nocturnal pleasures of Aidan and Lyssa first to better comprehend the realm where he comes from, fans will appreciate HEAT OF THE NIGHT as the hero walks out of her dreams turning her real life into a heated fantasy.-------------- Harriet Klausner

Having read this story before reading the book the preceded it, I found it hard to latch onto the story at first. So, I would definitely encourage reading the first installment prior to this one. However, I really did enjoy the story and the characters. I struggled to put the book down and would recommend it to anyone that enjoys a lot of action as well as romance.

Though Heat of the Night by Sylvia Day was written as part of a series, like most romances, it is one that you can read without picking up the first book and not risk getting confused or lost. Of course, reading the first one will not hurt you, and if it's anywhere near as good as the second, you'll love it also! I love a good steamy paranormal book. So when I read books from that genre, I am usually kind of harsh on them when I review them-- that is, if the books was not up to my standards. However, I have nothing bad to say about Heat of the Night, it was just that good! Unlike some paranormal type romances that seem to be yet another 'vampire story' or just another 'demons are attacking' story (Both of which I love, when they are done correctly.), Sylvia Day's newest series is unique and gripping, providing a great story to get lost in on a hot summer's day. But be warned: Before starting this book, grab a huge pitcher of ice cold lemonade and a fan--heck, forget the lemonade part, just grab the pitcher of ice! Because when you open up this book, only a few chapters in and you'll be submerged in the hot, steamy love of Connor and Stacey. This book's content are not for that faint of heart. As much as I love the romance behind a, you guessed it!, romance book, I also like the story to be more than just the gushy, heartwarming emotions that cause something in your stomache to flutter (butterflies, perhaps?). Don't get me wrong, those emotions are precious and they are what makes a book- and a relationship- about more than just straight up no-strings-attached sex. But I want more, I want to read about the reckless passion that started all of those feelings. The wild, untamed, slightly more baser emotions that humanity has had to deal with from the beginning of time, the one that reminds us that men were meant to be created different from women so that they could join, becoming two halves of one whole. Heat of the Night delivers all of that and so much more. For centuries, Connor has been the hard Elite killer, keeping both the Dreamers and fellow Guardians safe from the Nightmares. But when he makes the choice of moving to the Twilight, AKA regular Earth, to track down an evil being out to harm their civilization, possibly destory it forever, he had no idea that on the other side, a hot-blooded single mother would be waiting for him-- and waiting to turn his whole world upside down! When he shows up at Aidan, his best firend and fellow ex-Elite member, he wasn't expecting the curvy, beautiful woman to open the door, to both the house and his heart.Stacey can't believe that there is a sexy man standing in her friend's doorway, looking like an ancient Viking stepping off his ship, set on conquering anything. Thought she doesn't understand what's going on, and she wants to shove him back out the door, her body seems to think differently. Of course, after he rests (The journey over always weakens his kind.) he sets out to seduce her-- but does he end up with more than he set out for? Instead of simply an exchange of bodies, does it end up being a deeper, more meaningful exchange of hearts and souls? Both of them are hesitant to believe that a permanent relationship will work out between the two of them, but they both try, because they know that they cannot live without each other. It would simply be existing, a body physically alive, but not truly living. Besides the great romance and steamy sex, Heat of the Night also provides some action and adventure. Together they save her son from the clutches of the ex-Guardian that Connor was originally sent her to follow. In the end, all ends well, and they settle down to become one big happy family. 5/5 stars! Heat of the Night is a great book if you love your romances to be more supernatural than realistic and borderline erotic instead of a tamer courtship. Don't miss this great series by a wonderful author!

I'm waiting for the next book in the series.

I enjoyed this series...let me say that up front. But this ending was terrible! To call it an ending is giving it too much credit. There is no ending. There is no closer for any of the characters and no answers to any questions. This has to be the laziest series ever. Not only are sentences literally copy and pasted from book to book you get lost in who's perspective your reading from. Questions not answer: Do either Lyssa or Stacey have babies? Does Rachel return? What is the Key really? What was Aidan's mentors plan? Why hide the half human daughter? Who was she? Do they ever find the things for Lyssa? I could go on and on and on... I do love the characters. But these books could have been better and we need a third book with an ACTUAL ENDING!!

It was just as good as the first book. It would have been nice if the author could have been thinking about her readers by letting them know there is a third book coming.

I really enjoyed the first book of this series, and this 2nd book did not dissapoint. I liked that we were given the opportunity to pull away from the main characters of the first book, and learn more about Connor and Stacey. I am just bummed that it doesn't appear that the 3rd book is anywhere in sight. Please don't leave us hanging Sylvia.
