I read the whole Twilight Saga and the whole Sookie Stackhouse series, so i wanted a new book to read and bought this one. This book is good fix when you are like me and wanted more on the whole Vampires wanting more blood, sex and violence. I would not recommend this book to anyone 18 years or younger. It has a LOT of adult content in it, so if you are a prude this book is not for you either....a very easy read..

If you like True Blood, this is a must read! It's a romance novel, but not cheesy. It has It's funny moments too. I wish there were more in this series, I loved it!!!

This was a really good romance! I just finished it and had to order the rest of it's series! LOVED IT!

This book introduces the concept of vampires for neophites that deal with the underworld. A great sister read. Not boring, packed with action, adventure, and sexual excitement.

I just got the book less than 3 hours ago and I already read the entire thing. It had me laughing like a loony all by myself. I'm glad that I bought the other two that go with it. I can't wait to read them as well. If you want something funny, sexy, and fast paced this is your book!

This book was a pleasant surprise. I picked it up at a book sale over the summer. I don't care for the cover of the book much but I love reading vampire stories so picked it up. I love how sassy Alexis is in this book. I thought the book ended with some loose ends but I guess that is why there is another book to read in the series. I plan on passing this book along to some friends who love a good vampire story. No gore here but just some fun romance.

I had to grudgingly admit (this is coming from someone who runs away from the romance shelves) I actually liked this book. Alexis is a great likable character; she's got wit, she's stubborn as an ox, she knows how to fight back (literally), and her sense of humor is hilarious. With a main character like that, it was thanks to her that got me so interested in this book I read at least more than half of it in one morning and then finished it the next day. The plot was all right. It does follow the typical romance genre standard plot line but the characters are likable and engaging and they provided so much entertainment, I found myself chuckling a couple of times because of Alexis and Ethan and how they felt about each other at first, and their banter was extremely entertaining. Although the sub-plot of several of Ethan's enemies trying to oust him from running for President is interesting, I actually wished they focused more on that plot instead of having to spotlight the main couple all the time. It left me with a lot of questions and now that certain events now happened regarding some of his enemies, I really want to know what's going to happen next. What bugged me was, although they were some trying to kill Ethan, it seemed as if both Ethan and Alexis didn't really care, they were too busy being in love with each other - which caused me to roll my eyes in frustration. Yes, I do realize this is a romance novel, but the intrigue plot is so interesting, why give that up to showcase the couple? wouldn't the plot to kill Ethan be just as exciting?I also liked the plot with Brittany and Corbin. I thought they made such a cute couple and I was actually wanting more of those two instead of Ethan and Alexis, sure they were fun to read, but as soon as the "mushy stuff" came in, I just wanted them to move on and wanted to learn more about Corbin and his "research". Although Brittany strikes me a terribly naive and a little on the ditzy side, you can't help but like her because it's like she doesn't have a bad thought for anybody and nothing seems to ruin her day. She's such an exact opposite of Alexis but it's nice to see, so at least you don't see the book through eyes of one side all the time. There are love scenes for those that enjoy that sort of thing, I particularly don't care much for them, so those were skipped. They do become more frequent as Alexis and Ethan are closer together towards the end of the book. It does get old, and tiring and the plot just remains stagnant with those two. I do admit, they do make a nice couple. (Although upto the point where they got mushy I switched to preferring Brittany and Corbin). The other problem I do have is it was predictable in some parts. Oh well. I actually expected that in this story. It wasn't bad enough to ruin my enjoyment of the novel.Overall, it was a nice light read despite some pitfalls. I was able to tolerate it and I enjoyed it because of such entertaining characters. The story and plot could have used some work though. Those that love romance with vampires in it, give this a try. It's on the light side so don't expect things to get too dark.

Oh, is this a fun book. The cover is a tad misleading--as far as I can tell, none of the vampires in High Stakes turns into a bat--but it's eyecatching, and it does let you know that this is a comedy.Prosecuting attorney Alexis Baldizzi is understandably alarmed when her dentist sister Brittany leaves her practice and moves into Ethan Carrick's casino. So, in true protective big sister fashion, she rides to the rescue.Turns out that Carrick is a vampire--the vampire president, in fact, and he's running for election. Brittany, as an "impure" (offspring of a vampire and a mortal--she and Alexis have different fathers), will help him cinch the election once he marries her.The problem is that Carrick's not really interested in sweet, traditionally beautiful Brittany, but he's smitten by Alexis's strength and (to put it nicely) womanly figure. Not to mention that in over 900 years, Alexis is the only woman to stand up to him.I had a couple of minor problems with the story--at the beginning of the book, Brittany was so ditsy I had doubts she could get through high school, much less dental school. The character improved as the story went along, but that first impression took a while to fade. And the ending left some threads hanging that I wanted tied up.But other than that, High Stakes is a fun, fast read, in a similar style to MaryJanice Davidson's Undead series. I really enjoyed the idea of democratic vampire politics, a nice change from the usual monarchy or dictatorship. The secondary characters were interesting and unusual--I particularly loved the serious campaign manager, the too-trusting secretary, and the outcast French vampire scientist.Alexis's and Brittany's differing reactions to the revelation that vampires exist was also well done, I thought. Brittany figured it out on her own, and has decided to stay until she can find a way to save them. Alexis (again, in true big sister fashion) is less credulous, and believes for quite a long time that they're role-playing, or trying to con people like her sister, or dangerously deluded.

I just don't get all the great reviews for this book. Its not a bad book. Its just not at all impressive. Alexis is a lawyer who meets a vampire/casino owner/president of the vampires named Ethan who is holding her sister Brittany. She trades herself for him and in a matter of seconds they go from hating each other, to bed together, to madly in love. The supporting characters too, were fairly unimaginitive. I felt this book boldly took ideas from Lydsay Sand's Argeneau vampire series including the idea of 'diabetic' flavored blood, among other things. Even for a romance it was heavy of the sexual innuendo. At a critical scene where his true love lay dying, all he can think is that he wants to jump her bones! Then the minute she comes too, she teases him for his obvious sexual 'interest' in her. This was just too much for me. I love cute, comical, romantic vampire novels. This just wasn't much of any of those things. The thin mysteries introduced were never in any way concluded and tons of questions are left unanswered. This is not the way to finish a book, even when its a part of a series. A series book should mostly wrap things up to leave the reader satisfied, and leave just a crumb or two of something interesting to keep us eagerly anticipating the next installment. Readable...thats about the best thing I can say for this story. Unfortunately I bought the second book at the same time so eventually I may still read that.

Alexis Baldizzi charges in to rescue her sister Brittany from Ethan Carrick, a vampire politician in Las Vegas. She finds herself attracted to him and finds that she has a very complicated reaction to him and isn't sure what to do about being attracted to a man who is many centuries older than her and survives on a diet of blood. It's lighthearted and fun. Light but enjoyable.

This is a nice quick summer beach read kinda book. It sounds silly, but when I picked out this book I did not know it was a romance book. Anyway, it definitely is. The story is a fun love story complete with vampires who have a governmental system and registered vampire voters. With that said I did not find it too cheesy, I know some of you reading this may think that. I think that if you like vampires and romance books it would be something you may want to pick up for the pool or a light r...more This is a nice quick summer beach read kinda book. Witty and charming, but a bit too much sex and not enough Las Vegas. I like books set in cities I know, but I didn't get quite enough Vegas feel here.
