Overview

Many of the fiercest battles of the Civil War were fought in the home. Oscie Mason knows this all too well.

The first shots of the war were fired on her front lawn - a sign of things to come. Oscie's a proud daughter of the Old South, but her stepfather, Will McLean, thinks the world of her childhood must change. Oscie won't accept anything he has to say. And the tension between them is about to explode.

To escape the war, Will McLean moves the family to a quiet town called Appomattox. But the war will follow them there, as sure as the hurtful battle will continue in Oscie's home, and in her heart. Can Oscie call a truce - or will all that she cherishes become a casualty of war?

This book is awesome!I liked the relationship between Oscie and Will Mclean. Even though Oscie didn't liked Will Mclean at first, over the years it shows how they came to respect and love each other as father and daughter. It is also very interesting how the first battle of the civil war was fought in their house, and the surrender of the war was in their other house in Appomattox Court House. I couldn't believe that this actually happened in real life. That Wilmer Mclean actually moved away to get away from the war, and the surrender occured right in their house! It is the best book I have read in a long time. I recomend it to alllll!!

This is my favorite novel about the Civil War. The story begins in the 1850's when Oscie Mason is around 7 years old and ends when she is around 20. Oscie goes through many hardships as she adapts to the hard times of the War in her Virginia home. There are many different moods to the story. One minute you cry and the next minute your laughing. The book is filled with excitement, romance, and the life of a young girl coming of age during the Civil War.

Do you know how suprised I was when I read this? I was actually dreading having to read this book but I love it!! Before if you said anything about history or historical fiction I would pretend to gag. Now if I even hear Ann Rinaldi's name I go crazy. This was the 1st book that I read of hers and now I read her books all the time. I must have read this at least 7 times, no joke!! I strongly suggest you read this book.

I am a 14 year old 8th grader at watkins middle school and we were assigned by our language arts teacher to pick a book out of the 4 choices we were given and as soon as i heard the descripition i knew that was going to be an outstanding book and i was right. If you like a book that takes you on an exciting ride than you will love this book from beginning till the end and it has some lessons in there and it is easy to relate to and occasionally you may get emotional but through out the whole book it is suspesneful and very deep i would highly reconmmend it and i rate this book a million stars!!!....

This is an awesome book that you just have to read. It is a great tale of a girl named Oscie who had to deal with having the first battle of the Civil War being faught on her front lawn right after losing her beloved father. It also has romance in it(which i love). Ann Rinaldi has written a beautiful and touching book that reaches the heart of everyone who reads it.

I never really liked historical books. But i love books about teens. so when i had to go to barnes and noble to pick a book for a book report at school, i naturally went to the teens sections. i was pretty much broke so i needed something cheap and "appropriate" for the teacher. so i just picked up this book and went to the cash register to purchase it. it took a LOOOONG time for me to even start reading it because those of you who are in new york, know that there is something called a SCI-HI exam. and i hadd to prepare 4 it. so when i did get to the middle of the book, i realized that i didnt want this book to end. IT WSA THE BEST BOOK EVER!!! it has history(which i like now),romance(i love) and things about a teen. my fav.things to read about!!!!!

This book is so truthful and really gives a good picture of what it was like for some families back then and how they delt with their worlds' being turned upside down. They learn life and love and what it means to be an American.

This is a great book. You learn so much about the civil war. And to know that some of the happenings were real is amazing. Some of their stuff is actually in a museum.

This book was a very dramatic and discriptive book on life during the Civil War and how it might have been like. It is very emotional and a good relaxing book to read at home. It includes a good bit of suspense too.

This book is a great reading if you like a interesting romance, about war and the things a teenager had to go through during the hardships when our world suffered the most. I would suggest this book for anyone to read. just as my wonderful english teacher did for me.

That's the only word to describe this book. I hadn't been into the historical fiction thing until I read this book. It got me hooked. It told thestory of how Oscie grew up during the Civil War and had inner battles with herself over issues such as slavery. It was an interesting read and I reccomend it to everyone.
